Martin Archer Died-Murdered; Dr. John A. Ritter, Jr., Seriously Injured
Indianapolis (IN) Sentinel, July 12, 1882, p. 5.
MURDER
Special to the Sentinel: Paoli, Ind., July 10-Martin Archer of French Lick
Township was murdered Saturday night. His body was found yesterday in the
woods near West Baden Springs with three bullet wounds upon it. He was last
seen Saturday night at the Springs in company with a young man with whom he
had recently had a difficulty and between whom and himself it is known that
there was bad blood. Since then the young man's whereabouts have been
unknown, and from the facts stated, and the further fact that a fine horse
belonging to ex-Trustee James McCauley, of the neighborhood, was stolen the
same might, it is thought the young man in whose company Archer was last
seen committed the murder, stole the horse and fled. An inquest is now
being held.
Dr. John A. Ritter, Jr., of West Baden, was seriously, if not fatally,
injured Saturday by being struck in the region of the heart with a heavy
piece of timber thrown from a circular saw.
