TAGGART'S HOTEL RAIDED
Gambling Alleged at French Lick and Baden Casino
Paoli, Ind., July 3-Attorney General Charles Miller, acting under
instructions from Governor Hanley, today filed in the Orange County courts
an action to revoke the charter of the French Lick Springs Hotel Company at
French Lick, this state.
The company is a corporation of which Thomas Taggart, chairman of the
Democratic and national committee, is president. It is charged that
gambling is allowed on the property owned by the hotel company.
A second suit was filed by the Attorney General against the Baden Springs
Hotel Company in which demand is made for the revocation of the company's
charter on account of alleged permission of gambling on the property.
Sheriff Maris, Deputy Sheriff Jones, Constable Baggerly and City Marshal
John Salich (difficult to read), raided the casino at the French Lick and
West Baden Springs Hotels today at the same hour that Attorney General
Miller filed proceedings in the circuit court. A number of arrests were
made, and considerable gaming paraphernalia was captured.
In the clauses charging gambling at both hotels, the complaint says that the
defendant "has exceeded and abused its charter rights and privileges and has
usurped and arrogated to itself authority that was never granted and which
it has never rightfully had and cannot have," and that "the open, notorious,
wanton and willful violation of the laws of the state" have menaced the
morals and welfare of society and the good name of the state," that the
defendant "has forfeited all its corporate rights, privileges and franchises
and its right to exist."
.A dissolution of the defendant corporation and forfeiture of its corporate
rights and franchises is asked for.
