Hello, My name is Jolene Huddleston and I am researching these names in
Orange County Indiana: Vandever, Halbert, Evans, Glover, and Lindley.
Thomas Vandever entered land in Paoli Twp. in 1817. His wife Nancy Davis
died in that same year. Thomas married Hannah Glover 13 december 1818 and
most of their 11 children were born in Orange County. In the year 1820
Thomas lived 2 households from Uriah Glover and 5 from Charles Glover.
Thomas and Hannah are listed on the 1820 Federal Census showing him in the
45 or older and her 16 - 26. Thomas and Hannah were listed again on the
1830 Federal Census of Orange County with 7 children under 10 years of age.
Thomas had served as a Baptist minister in Kentucky and continued to do so
in Orange County. He served at the Mt. Zion and Spice Valley Churches.
Thomas served as a justice of the peace and associate court judge. By the
year 1840 Thomas and Hannah moved to Clay County Illinois where he
continued the ministry until his death in 1844. I descend through his
oldest child by his second marriage, James Madison Vandever. Madison lived
most of his life in nearby Martin County. Madison married a woman with
Orange County ties. She was Martha Evans the daughter of Thomas and
Elizabeth (Halbert) Evans. The Evans along with Elizabeth's parents Joel
and Mary (Lindley) Halbert had been in Orange County by the year 1815 when
they came from South Carolina. The Evans and Halbert families had moved to
Martin County by 1820. Four of the Evans children married 4 of Thomas
Evans's children. There obviously must have been some travel between the 2
counties. I would like to hear from anyone researching any of these
families. Thomas Evans has been my brick wall. I know he came from South
Carolina and before 1815 he is lost to me. He was active in local politics
and served as a judge in Martin County. His will showed him to be a man
who had been successful.
