One way to find townships is to buy the Indiana 1876 Atlas from the
Indiana Historical Soc. for about $15, it's about 15 X 24" and has
detailed maps of each county, and shows the townships. Census records
also show what township each person is in. French Lick is in French Lick
Twp. I see some Paytons in my own file but not Ulysses Grant, I'll look
at some other data and see if I have more. I have access to the birth
records for Orange Co for that era from the WPA records done in the
1930's for Orange Co.
