Becky:
Let me point out that conscientous objection to bearing arms does NOT
imply a person is Quaker. Many other groups (and individuals) share that
conviction.
If someone has the Owen Stout history, please compare it to the on-line
Goodspeed History and tell us how they differ.

I've been referring to the Goodspeed History on the Orange Co.
website for quite sometime and printing out pages with reference to my ancestors. I
thought that the Owen Stout history might be an entirely different one, but I guess that
is not the case. I ran across a reference to it in "The Prewitt-McDonald Genealogy
and Allied Families" document that is in the
Ancestry.com Family and Local Histories
database. This document mentions that in Owen Stout's History of Orange County it is
stated that,"In 1819, John Willliams and 31 others, being conscientiously opposed to
bearing arms were each required to pay into the County Treasury $4.00." I looked
through the online version of Goodspeed's history but could not find that reference
anywhere, so I assumed that Stout's must have different information.
Anyone have any views on that? Also, it sounds as if these 31 above mentioned must have
been Quakers. I am of Williams descent and am trying to determing if my Williamses were
Quaker. That would be Absolom>Jonathan>Wilson Williams.
