Remember all, the world wasn't built in a day and it may take many
days--even years--to get the information you want. The information on the
internet has been wonderful, and the ability to write to others researching
the same things has been so valuable to me.
When I first started searching, my spouses' family name was almost never on
the internet, and that was only two years ago. Now I get all kinds of
information about some of the family. It would be nice to put all the pieces
together, but I need to put into my data base some of what has been sent to
me.
Just take your time, by writing the families on paper, I find I sort out
some of the information. So try that. Have you a data base to put your
information into?
Ancestry.com was offering one "free" and you can download
one from the LDS site too which is also "free". I hesitate to spend any
money joining or buying any of the information--even though I have paid for
Civil War veteran's information from the government. My father died about 15
years ago and I need to know the cause of death, and it will cost me $15 to
get a copy of his death certificate--which I think is a horrible amount of
money.

Jan and Kay - thanks for info you provided here. I do have notes on
these Doughertys as I have checked all the available records I see at
the Genweb Orange County site and some other Dougherty sites and that is
why it is driving me crazy. None of the Georges are mine I see so far,
but too many things place my George there in Orange. The Plenty (Nora)
Dougherty in Martin County born to George and Mary is mine. I continue
to stay open to any help one has to offer and if any suggestions on
getting a researcher there are greatly appreciated--more direction? I
have much info here I am working with and would love someone to help me
sort it out and deal with the facts and the speculations. Anne-Marie

Anne Marie:
There are several of us researching the different DOUGHERTY families in
Orange County.
My Julia Ann DOUGHERTY who married Samuel FRENCH came to Orange County
where
they homesteaded and she is buried on the old home place (still
standing or
it was from the pictures sent to me).
Mary Lou Morgan is also researching these people.
Julia Ann's parents were Robert DOUGHERTY and Nancy WILLIAMS.
Here is what I have and I'll bet if we go a little further, we'll find they
are all connected!

Barbara;
That is my problem. I do not know the name of the spouse of Zac.
The very next thing I found was a probate court record from 1843,
Livingston
County Missouri. This stated three of his children, Malinda, Samuel
W., and
Nancy were there having guardians appointed for them. Malinda was born abt
1825, so she would have been abt 18, and had Wm Martin Sr appointed for
her.
Samuel W. Cox was born 1826, so he would have been abt 17, and he ask
for
Thomas S. Cox to be appointed for him. Nancy was born in 1829, so she was
abt
14, and George W. Martin was appointed for her.
Outside these three older children, no mention was made of the mother, or
the
younger siblings.
My own Gr-gr-grandfather, Levi Cox was born Feb 12 1838, Orange County, so
he
was only 5 at the time of his father's death. He DID NOT have a
guardian
appointed.
The next time I found him, age 13, was in the household of his uncle, Levi
Cox, (born 1800) in 1850 Livingston Co. MO. Don't know who cared for him
the
first 13 years of his life.
So, you can see why I would love to get some information out of Orange
County.

My mom's father died when she was four years old. Her mother had an older
child who went to live with her grandparents when the first husband died.
My
mom and her brother were shifted around from relative to relative, to
their
mom for a little while, then back to someone else their entire life. This
may be the case of the relative you are seeking information about.
