Morgan, go to the Bureau of Land Records at:

This might be too early for your ancestor but type in James Smith.....there
is one record for a James Smith in Orange County in 1820...you can see the
actual record by clicking on Land Patent Image. They are fun to print
out.....so old!
Have you linked up to my Julia Ann DOUGHERTY who married Samuel FRENCH yet?
Her Father and Mother were Robert DOUGHERTY and Nancy WILLIAMS from Barren
and Jessamine County, Kentucky.
