My great-grandfather, Thomas Wininger, was the superintendent of the county poor farm in
1900 and 1910. The building is still there on the Syria (or as the locals call it
"Sorry") road. When I was up there in Dec. 2004, a family lived in the house.
To reach the poor farm you go north on 37 a couple of miles past Walmart. There's a
sign on the right that says Syria Christian church. Follow that road a few miles toward
Stampers Creek or Punkin Center and the house is a 2 or 3 story red brick on the right.
You can't miss it.
There is a cemetery across the road but I don't think very many graves have markers.
My grandmother said they moved some of the graves while her father worked at the poor
farm. I think they had to move the graves when they widened or fixed the road. I have a
photo of my great-grandparents and their children standing on the front porch of the poor
farm.
There was a website about Poor Farms at
http://www.poorhousestory.com but it doesn't
seem to be active anymore.

I looked in the 1930 census and found the "Poor Farm" and the people there.
If you email me off list I will send the image to you. It is listed in Paoli
Township on Tyra Road( at least that's what the writing looks like.) You can
be the judge of that as the writing isn't clear. Joyce
It appears the County Poor Farm has been moved, if your instructions are
correct.
Yes, the original location was by the Sheriif's Office and Jail in the
1930's. It was a red brick building.
Would anyone have the email address for the Sheriff's Office in Paoli ?
Perhaps I can contact them.
Thanks for your help.
