Education in Orange County, prior to the mid 1850s was by tuition only. The
course of study was from the extreme rudiments of the 3 Rs to preparation
for further study at the college level. The following advertisement was from
the Paoli True American, April 1841 and explains the courses of study
available and the prices charged. This school was located east of Paoli,
just south of the Stamper's Creek church and cemetery.

SCHOOL
The Public is respectfully informed that the undersigned will commence
teaching school on the 13th day of this month (April 1841) in the
Independent Seminary, in the N. E. district of Township 1, N of Range 1 E.
The sessions will continue for three months, or thirteen weeks, five days
each week. The terms of tuition will be: for teaching Reading, Writing,
Arithmetic and small Geography, $2.50 per session; for English Grammar, the
large Geography, Natural Philosophy, Mental Philosophy, Moral Science,
Ancient and Modern History, $3. For Algebra, Geometry, Surveying, Rhetoric,
Chemistry, Latin and Greek grammars, the rudiments of Anatomy and
Physiology, $4. Those living at a distance and wishing to tend school, it is
presumed, can procure boarding in the neighborhood of the school house, upon
very reasonable terms and will do well to call shortly and make
arrangements, as the school will be limited to 40 students.
