I just yesterday returned from a visit to Orange County, where I searched
for the grave of my great grandfather, John A. Wells, a Civil War veteran.
He was buried in Hunt Cemetery. This cemetery was listed on the Orange Co.
Web site, but had no listing of burials. The cemetery is not on the Orange
County map that lists other cemeteries and the surveyors office had no
record of it. I finally went to the Trustree of Greenfield Twp. (thanks to
the OC web site, I knew the twp.) and asked him if he knew where it was
(since the trustee is the one responsible for keeping them up). He did not,
but located a resident of the twp. who finally gave me directions to it.
In case anyone wants to find it:
Take 37 South our of Paoli
Just after crossing the Patoka River, look for road 840 and turn right onto
it. (It soon becomes gravel.) Go about two miles, until you come to
a bridge across Dillard Creek. Park there (it is the only place where the
road is wide enough) and walk back until you see a wire gate in an electric
fence on the right (about 15 yards). Go through the gate, there are cows in
the field, but they didn't hurt us, (although they did approach us). About
a quarter mile into the field, the cemetery is on your right, by the creek.
There is an electric fence around it, so be careful.
Most of the stones are knocked over. Jesse Wells and his wife is there as
is John A. Wells and his wife Nancy. There are Hunts as well.
I should be interested to know if this cemetery has ever been copied. If
not I will try to go back in the winter (when the poison ivy is asleep) and
do so.
