I had some success in getting a cemetery cared for in Martin Co. by
contacting the twp. trustee. Indiana code states that cemeteries that don't
have any type of caretaker must be taken care of by the townships.
Unfortunately, another cemetery where my family is buried (Pike Co.) has
been vandalized repeatedly and abused for many years. Unfortunately, it was
vandalized after having been cleaned up at least once. :(
There is a group fighting to protect and preserve our cemeteries: Indiana
Pioneer Cemeteries Restoration Project. Their site, "Hall of Shame", is at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~inpcrp/hallofshame.html
and the old Mt. Horeb Cemetery is the only cemetery listed in Orange County
as being neglected.
If you have the directions to the cemeteries in question and can supply
information to the site owner, Lois Mauk, please do so. It helps to bring
attention to these poor, neglected cemeteries.
INPCRP is also involved in getting legislation passed to protect and
preserve our cemeteries.
