THis is the transcription of a letter from my great Great Grandmother Nancy Jenkins
Shehane Pate to her cousins Rachel and Calvin Latta written at Coopersville, Indiana (Ohio
Co)
May 8, 1859
Dear Cousin,
It is with pleasure I attempt to answer your letter that came to hand 2 weeks ago. I
should have answered sooner but we was fixing for a wedding. Rachel Jenkins your name sake
was married April 28. She married a man by the name of Boston Vanesdal. Sally has been
married eight years. Jane has been married six years. Sally married a Thomas Douglas. Mary
Jane married Stewart Latton. Sally has two girls living and 2 dead. Jane has 1 little girl
living and one dead. This includes all of Mothers grandchildren. Fathers children are
nearly all grown up. Martins youngest child is now 10 years old. Alexander is quite a
large man. Mother says he looks just like your brother John used to look - he weighs 170
lbs. Father's health is remarkably good for an old man. He is in his 77th year and he
is busy from morning until night feeding and tending to his stock and he has never given
up worlk yet for he can do a pretty good days worlk yet. Mother is as stout and rugged as
a bear.
She is a good deal stouter than some of us girls. I have not had very good health for a
long time. I have been troubled with something like bronchitis and liver complaints for
about 4 years. I have taken a good deal of medicine but I ant cured yet. The rest of the
family is generally healthy. Aunt Peggy Hannah is still alive. She ain't very stout
neither is Uncle John - they both look tolerable poor and old aunt July (Julie) Lattons
family is all well except Sarah. She still has her fits - she has lost her reason
considerable. I think her fits gets harder all the time. Aunt Jane Tinker's family is
all well. We haven't heard from Aunt Sally Drake for some time. The last we heard they
was all well. Her youngest Malinda died 2 years ago this spring. She died of consumption.
I believe I have told you all the news I know of. You spoke of some seeds. It is too late
to send them for this spring but I will send them in the next letter and you can have them
for next summer to
plant. Father would have answered this letter but his hands are so unsteady he hardly
ever writes anymore. I do all of his writing for him. Mother says she wants you to come
and see us if you can. She wants to see you all once more. Write as often as you can and
direct your letters to Coopersville, Ohio Co., Indiana. Mother and Father sends their love
to you all. Tell Julie and Washington to write to us. Remember our love to them.
