OBERTATE is the surname I am researching in Ohio Co. IN
Casper Henry John OBERTATE came to Rising Sun, IN in the year 1872. He
was a stowaway according to family
lore, and is probably true because he is not listed on the ship's list
that his naturalization app says
he came on. He came from Markendorff, Germany.
Later that year Catherine Louise HUNTING came to Rising Sun. She had a
sister living there,
Flora Hunting DIEKMAN, wife to Karl F. Diekman
Louise Hunting came on the ship OHIO, 5 August 1872, landing at
Baltimore.
Other names on the ship includeUHLMANSIECK and DETTMER, both with lots of
descendants, in
the Rising Sun area.
Louise Hunting and John Obertate married October of 1874.
I'm in good shape coming this way with info on the Obertates, They moved
to Carroll Co. KY c.1880.
Their dau Fannie married Herman RAKER, my husband's grandfather.
In Rising Sun, there is an older Casper Henry Obertate. I thought,
bingo, the father........nope!!
The elder names sons Henry, Frank, Charlie. Wife of the elder is Clara.
The gravestones say the older Obertate is from Markendorff.
Am I within reason to assume the John Obertate coming in 1872, is just
maybe the nephew of
the older Casper Henry Obertate?
There is also a naturalization petition for an Andrew Obertate, dated
1867.
John of 1872 names his second son Andrew, his earlier son was named
Charles (died in infancy)
DOES ANY OF THE ABOVE RING A BELL WITH ANYONE??????????
I have met descendants of the elder Obertate, and we know it all goes
together, but the
proof must be in Germany??
Phyllis
The turn of the century idea sounds like a good idea......
