I have an ancestor that was in Rising Sun Indiana. His name was James Turbitt
Pollock. Interesting fellow. It seems he moved his family from WV to Rising
Sun and settled a big produce farm and sold produce up and down the river. He
also became the dem. state rep, State Senator, then Commissioner of Public
monies in Crawfordsville, IN. He didn't like it up there and moved back to
Rising Sun then there was a major scandal and he lost everything. Does anyone
know if there is a historical society that might have information about
Rising Sun in the 1820-s -40's? History of Rising Sun sort of thing....maybe
who's who of Rising Sun? Was there a newspaper back then? This guy's story is
so interesting that I have to find out more and seem to run into all sorts of
dead ends.
Notes from the Indiana Historical Society say he bought all the small farms
in the vicinity of his place on his word (no collateral) and when the scandal
hit (money disappeared from his office) he sold everything and the folks in
the community lost everything because his word wasn't worth a plug nickel and
he fled to KY.
I would like to know more about Rising Sun in the early years. Any ideas?
