A few years ago I visited the Union cemetery and the Rising Sun cemetery in search of
ancestors
supposedly buried there.
I recall the caretaker of one of those cemeteries mentioning to me that one particular
section
of the cemetery was originally reserved for "colored burials".
Unfortunately I do not remember which cemetery. I think it was the Union cemetery.
Both the Union and Rising Sun cemeteries are located very near to one another.
Surely someone in the group will be able to help you further.

Hello! I am new to this list. I'm resarching African American
ancestors
who lived in or around Rising Sun IN between about 1865 and 1900 -
surnames LEFTRIDGE, BRINEGAR, MARSHALL and SHEETS. I am particularly
interested in cemeteries where they may have been buried during this time.
I have not found them in published cemetery listings for Ohio County or
Switzerland County. They appeared to have gone back and forth between
Rising Sun and Patriot in Switzerland County. My great grandfather was
OSCAR LEFTRIDGE who served the Union during the
Civil War (KY regiment). I would like very much to locate his grave in
order to place a monument honoring his service.
Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.
