Rising Sun Indiana is the place that Robert Fulton and his father-in-law
chose to build riverboats. They never really got started on the "shipyard"
there because of Robert's untimely death. When Robert Fulton died of a
respiratory infection after trying to save someone who had fallen through
ice into a river, his brother inherited the enterprise and died at Rising
Sun when a tree fell on him while trying to clear the land.

Most interesting about the houseboats being made into gunboats. Can you
give further describe these boats? Never heard of houseboats being made
into gunboats in the Civil War, but could have happened.
Rising Sun must have been like all small towns in America in 1865. What
month? Before April or after. Either awaiting the end of the War or
joyful that this terrible episode in US history was over. Interesting, too,
that your Arkansas grand father came to this particular town. Did he have
any kin in RS?
