The original town cemetery in Rising Sun consists of Cedar Hedge ("newer")
Cemetery and Union Cemetery (the older, original cemetery), which are adjacent
to one another and separated only by the gravel lane which bisects them. These
cemeteries are behind (west of) the high school and in the shadow of the
water tower ("Rising Sun, Home of the Shiners") on the west side of Downey
Street, which runs south from Main Street, about 4 blocks west of Walnut (Highway
56).
Cedar Hedge and Union Cemeteries are "Section 23" and "Section 24",
respectively, in Ohio County Cemeteries by Dillon R. Dorrell. The map of Ohio County
cemeteries is between pages 64 and 65. (A reprint of this book is available at
the Museum.) Union Cemetery is to the north, and Cedar Hedge is to the south.
Union Cemetery has been in use since approximately 1820. It's name may have
faded from memory and fallen out of common useage, but anyone in town should
know where the "old" cemetery is.
