"Hartford is said to have been laid out in 1817 by Benjamin Walker and his son John
who owned adjoined farms there and erected a grist and saw mill."
I have been studying the map and the land records for the Hartford area. It appears that
John Walker bought the SE 1/4 of Section 23 in 1811. That is 160 acres. This is where
Hartford is located from what I can see on the map.
When Hartford was laid out in 1817, is that the first time that quarter section was
subdivided or was he able to subdivide and sell partial quarters before that? I read on
the Conner Prairie site that it wasn't until 1820 that public lands were available in
half quarter sections, 80 acres. How many acres was the Hartford plat? Is there a record
of purchases of the lots in Hartford?
