James P. Lewis is the father, the mother is Elizabeth (maybe Susan) Hall. My grandfather is John William Lewis born May 22, 1863. I have a copy of John William's death certificate that says father's name James P. Lewis born in Tennessee and mother is Elizabeth Hall born in Indiana. That is all the information I have on his parents. I can't find where James and Elizabeth were married, possibly Indiana because that is Elizabeth's home state and John William's birthplace is Rising Sun, Indiana. According to an old letter from an aunt, James and Elizabeth Lewis had at least four children, Benjamin, Bruce, Mary and the youngest was John William. According to the aunt James P. Lewis died while John William was very young. He was raised by his mother and grandmother whose maiden name was Moulton. John William Lewis (my grandfather) married Della (Nellie)F. Sutton. Nellie's mother was Isabelle Moulton. Isabelle's sister Hannah married Henry J. Lewis, maybe James P. is a b!
rother to Henry. John William Lewis and Nellie Sutton were cousin according to my aunt's letter. The Moulton and Sutton families were from Rising Sun, IN, some of them moved to Kansas. Nellie was born in Rising Sun but I find her and her family in Kansas at the age of four years. John William and Nellie raised their family in Kansas but I don't know when he went there.
I do have ancestry.com and have spent a lot of time searching for James P. Lewis. I can't find anything except the marriage on Henry J. Lewis and nothing on the marriage of James P. Lewis and Elizabeth Hall. It does make me wonder if the names of his parents were wrong on my grandfather, John William Lewis's death certificate.
Thank you for any help you can give me.
Burnice

My grandfather was born in Rising Sun in 1863 so I believe they may have been living there when his father James Lewis died because it was shortly after. His name was James P. Lewis, the P may stand for Paul as a grandson was named Paul. Elizabeth may have gone by Susan, possibly a middle name, as I found what seems to be my grandfather with mother Susan in the 1880 Rising Sun, Ohio County census. I hope that helps. Thank you for your help.
Thanks so much Wilma !
Your kindness is doing lookups is greatly appreciated.

Just found your message. I am looking for my great-grandfather, James Lewis, he would be fairly young as he died shortly after my grandfather was born in 1863. I have no other information. Also looking for his wife, my great-grandmother Elizabeth Lewis. She would have died later, possibly between 1880 and 1925.
Thank you for your help,

Welcome! This is the former Rootsweb list, INOHIO. We'll be discussing the history and genealogy of Ohio County, Indiana and its surrounding region of Southeastern Indiana, Southwestern Ohio (Cincinnati), and Northeastern Kentucky.
