A question for the lists:
These census films I have been viewing - I've moved the films over to
another machine at the FHC and made a copy of several sheets in them, the
ones containing my ancestors. These cost 0.30 each. I've seen people make 30
copies a visit on these machines (usually there is a 2-hour max time limit
on the viewers if there is a waiting line that day or evening).
Is it permissible to copy whole sections of the census and place them
on-line? I might be able to get the FHC to agree to let me copy every sheet
of entire townships (it would probably take about an hour for one). I can
scan these on my PC and post them on-line at the county site. I'm talking
about 1880 Noble, 1910 Wabash, now 1870 Kosciusko, and soon 1910 Kosciusko
and 1910 Noble Counties IN. Obviously I don't have the time to do all the
film's sheets, but there may be a consensus of the most popular townships or
towns to copy.
Does anyone know FHC policy (I haven't talked to them yet about this)?
Now the cost - $0.30 a sheet can add up when there are hundreds of sheets
(say many dozens for a township in IN in the region of time we are usually
talking about). I would ask for donations to pay for it.
Is any of this interesting to anyone? Would people pay their small share? Is
it permissible with Genweb and the County sites? With the FHC? With the fed
govt?
If anyone knows these answers or has an opinion, email away. If the response
may be interesting to the mail list members - mail to the list, otherwise,
email to my private email address.
