Hays John W was born in Ohio Oct. 18, 1841. He attended he common and high
schools of his native state and was engaged in teaching at the outbreak of
the Civil War. In 1862 he enlisted in Company A, 110 Regiment, Ohio
Infantry, and served with distinction to the close of the war, being
mustered out with the rank of first sergeant. His company saw service in
many of the hardest struggles of that great conflict, and part of the time
he was in command of his company, notably in the campaign at and about
Richmond. After the war he resumed teaching and while so engaged he married
Laura E. Munger on June 23, 1872. They had five children, two dying in
infancy. Surviving are the wife; two daughters, Edna and Olive; one son, Dr.
Woodward; and two grandchildren. He attended the Miami Medical College of
Cincinnati and was graduated in 1872, entering the practice of medicine in
Albion, where he has served our people for fifty years. Recognizing his
skill and diligence in surgery, the B&O Railroad Co. appointed him surgeon
when the road was built through Noble County. This position of trust and
responsibility he held down through the years at one time being president of
the B&O Surgeon's Association. For many years he served as secretary of the
Noble County Board of Health and the Albion Town Board of Health. He was a
Macabee, a Knight of Pythias, and a member of the Grand Army of the
Republic. An ardent Republican, he has served his party as county chairman.
With his own hands he fashioned a goodly portion of the furniture in his
home he and his wife established, and he built the first buggy he ever
owned. He brought to Albion the first thermometer and the first hypodermic
syringe. He died Jun 17, 1927. Funeral at the home Sunday. Burial, Albion
Cemetery. + 6-?-1927
