I just wanted to report to the list my findings regarding John Peacock that I have
formerly been posting.
I wrote to the Indiana State Library and obtained a copy of "An Act to change the
names of certain persons". I also wrote to the Indiana State Archives.
The Indiana General Assembly records indicate that John Peacock sent a petition, which
they read on the senate floor. Unfortunately, according to the Indiana State Archives,
the petitions did not survive, nor were there verbatim transcripts of what was said on the
senate floor during that period of time. Although it is nice to have the actual language
of the act, it didn't really answer any questions for me about why this happened. I
have come across references to John Peacock being adopted but not in any reliable sources.
I don't know whether this name change has to do with the formalization of an adoption
by a Lamb family earlier in John's life, or whether he may have been adopted by
whoever his Peacock parents were. In any case, I have posted the text of the act below.
So this is still a brick wall for me, but I'm sure I will have better luck knowing his
last name was Peacock originally than trying to find parents with the last name of Lamb.

Ryan,
It appears John was not a "birthright" Quaker, but I suspect he easily joined
the fledgling West Union MM. I'm not sure how men's minutes differ from other
minutes of the MM, but Thomas Hamm could tell you. A library with excellent Quaker records
of the area is the Plainfield Public Library, although I wouldn't discount that the
Mooresville library could have some information. I'm wondering if the records sent on
to the yearly meeting might mention names of individuals, particularly converts. I believe
the yearly meeting was the western yearly meeting, a Parke County group (maybe at
Bloomingdale?), but at the moment I can't remember the name, which I think was
different from Bloomingdale Friends.
There was a Friends School at West Union from the early 1830's to the mid 1870's.
I suppose finding some records would be unlikely.

The only Cane Creek MM of Susannah Peacock (formerly Williams) indicate she was disowned
for marrying out of unity. So it appears that John Peacock, at least initially, was not a
quaker. This record was recorded in 1817, around the year I believe they were married from
Susannah's guardianship records. I have corroborating evidence that it was John she
married from Susannah's guardianship records and deed records in Chatham County, North
Carolina. She was orphaned in 1811 at the age of 13.
The stories also say that John helped to start the first quaker church near Monrovia and
helped with Monrovia's initial settlement. The West Union records lost are the first
few years of the men's minutes.
The BLM records show John getting a land patent very near Monrovia in 1827.
Alfred's son John lived with John P Lamb's daughter's family and a "few
doors down" from John P Lamb after Alfred's death.

together. The kidnapping story may or may not be true. I did not realize the West Union MM
records were lost.
> If you think you may have missed anything in Quaker records, you might join the
Quaker list and/or consult Thomas Hamm at Earlham.
> If you haven't looked at land entries, the ISA can help you there also, to find
when John bought land anywhere in southern Indiana. I was going to suggest the Bureau of
Land Management GLO records website, but Indiana records are not currently shown among the
Eastern states.
> If you haven't looked for probates, you should be able to find various entries
in the order books, including administrator's bond, inventories, partial reports, and
final reports showing heirs.
> That might be either on microfilm in Morgan County or at the State Archives. The
Morgan County Public Library does some limited research via contact from their website, or
I can give you the name of a researcher in Morgan County.
> I wouldn't give extreme weight to someone's report of where they were born.
They were too young to be reliable witnesses. If Susannah came from Cane Creek as a single
young woman, her children were not born in NC.

The story goes that John Lamb kidnapped his half-brother Alfred and ran away to morgan
county from North Carolina when John was 16 and Alfred was 5. I have searched all of the
encyclopedias of quaker genealogy and have found only one item that kind of refers to
john. That is in 1817, John's wife susannah Peacock (formerly Williams) at Cane creek
MM in North Carolina. Unfortunately, early West Union MM records have been lost. I think
that if we found John anywhere in the quaker records, it would be in those lost records.

> Unfortunately, I know John Peacock Lamb's kids were listed as being born in
North Carolina, so either he went back there after kidnapping Alfred, or the story is
inaccurate. The story mentions that John never married, which is incorrect. He married
Susannah Williams, and they are both buried in West Union Cemetery. I do know that John
Peacock Lamb lived extremely near Alfred's family. One account indicates that he took
care of Alfred's widow and family after Alfred's death.

Guilford genealogical society in their quarterly publication. But as of this moment, I
believe the story to have some inaccuracies in it.

He's living among Quakers or descendants of Quakers. I can't tell if it's West
Union (Monrovia) or one of the Mooresville area Friends groups. I think you might benefit
from checking Quaker records, as I think anything regarding a name change might show up in
the Minute Books. Is Alfred Lamb his relative?

the Indiana a State Archives first. It sounds like Morgan county may not have the
information if the state legislature handled this matter. But I will certainly check the
county deed records if I can't find anything through the early legislative sessions.

Before courts of common pleas were set up, there were a couple of ways citizens could take
care of legal business. Maybe more. One was to ask the township JP to write something up
and take it to the Court House. Another was to have a non-deed published in the deed book
that was current, say deed books 1 or 2. In the case of divorces and other personal
matters, one could petition the state legislature. I think this may be what the Peacock
family did.
> > > I would still check the Morgan County deed book of 1826-1827 to see if the
matter is mentioned; however, a useful call for you would be the Indiana State Archives,
where a researcher could help you to understand the formation and nature of the
"Indiana Historical Collection", which is the reference from which your
reference about the "Laws 1826-1827" was taken.
