Some of the Ballards were Quaker and some were not practicing Quakers by the time they got
to Indiana. If Quaker, you can find out a lot about them through Quaker records. Harvey
is a name also found among Quakers and their families. I agree it's likely that
Charles A Harvey is a relative, or a non-relative, that they have included in their
family. You might look for a Harvey probate record for 1859-60 to see if a Harvey died
leaving an estate and needing a guardian for a child or children. Are there other Harvey
children added in other households? Quakers were methodical and law-abiding, and they
likely would have gone to court in Morgan County to appoint a guardian for this child. Of
course, there is also the possibility that this child's parent(s) may have died
elsewhere and the child brought to the Ballard family. So records could be in another
county or state. So again, Quaker records may be a help to you. The Quaker-Roots mailing
list could be helpful to you,!
as there are many knowledgeable persons there.
