Ryan,
Your question about the missing language should be put to the State Archives. And the
microfilm from the Historical Society may include the specific language. I can only
speculate as to why the language was excluded, but it may have been personal. Maybe
it's in a minute book somewhere in state records. That takes you back to the Archives.
ALL of Indiana's old records are in the keeping of the Indiana State Archives, as are
many records de-accessed from the counties.
I volunteered for a number of years at the ISA. There is a vault on the premises with the
most valuable, oldest records of the State of Indiana. Your mystery might lie therein.
I'm not sure if you can get access to a record from the vault.
Please keep the list informed of your progress in solving the mystery.
Sharon

Subject: Re: [Morgan Co IN] Help with Indiana source book reference
Sharon,
I just wanted you to know that your advice has led me to some very good information.
I have discovered an act passed by the Indiana legislature entitled:
"An act to change the names of certain persons" - Approved January 13, 1826
The most pertinent information I found is "the petition of John
Peacock, praying an act of the General Assembly to change his
name from Peacock to Lamb, for certain reasons therein set
forth; which was read;". I have pasted the source and entire language below.
Unfortunately, the document does not say what the petition said, and I don't know what
the reasons set forth were. I suspect that the reasons set forth will finally help me
discover the mystery of who his parents were and where exactly he came from.
Does anyone on the list know what the procedures for retaining this type of petition would
be by a state senate, and, if so, how one would go about finding the permanent record?
Also, does anyone know how to look up the actual language "An act to change the names
of certain persons" which was passed in 1826 in Indiana?
Thank you very much.
Ryan Cramer

I don't have your complete answer, but I think I have a start for you. Before courts
of common pleas were set up, there were a couple of ways citizens could take care of legal
business. Maybe more. One was to ask the township JP to write something up and take it to
the Court House. Another was to have a non-deed published in the deed book that was
current, say deed books 1 or 2. In the case of divorces and other personal matters, one
could petition the state legislature. I think this may be what the Peacock family did.
I would still check the Morgan County deed book of 1826-1827 to see if the matter is
mentioned; however, a useful call for you would be the Indiana State Archives, where a
researcher could help you to understand the formation and nature of the "Indiana
Historical Collection", which is the reference from which your reference about the
"Laws 1826-1827" was taken.
I looked at Source Book III, your resource, and found the information was an extractions
of names of citizens and their legal actions from (it appears to me) early legislative
sessions.
Clearly this was a very serious attempt to document early citizens and this aspect of
their lives.

Subject: [Morgan Co IN] Help with Indiana source book reference
Hi!
I found a reference in the "Indiana source book" regarding one of my wife's
ancestors who lived in Morgan County. It mentions that John Peacock, his wife susannah,
and children Louisa, Madison, and Betsy changed their last name to Lamb. I wanted to find
out what the original document said, so I wrote to the Morgan County court to get a copy
of it. The reference in the Indiana Source Book is:
Under Morgan County:
Laws, 1825-26, pp 42-43
The court said that they did extensive research into the civil order books, but
couldn't find anything, but they don't know exactly what the citation means.
Does anyone have any idea where I could look to find this document?
Thanks,
Ryan Cramer
