1900 census Mt Pleasant Search says Alexander and Cassie had 10 children all children
were still living, Alex father b Alabama. When requesting military pension records you
have to ask for ALL information in the file. There should be letters from people that
have known the soldier applying for the pension. The government didn't give pensions
until someone could prove who they were. Also he would have gotten more money when each
child was born that had to be documented also. Try Rootsweb and Family Search,
undocumented infor but, can give you some hints. Researching genealogy isn't always
and easy task takes a lot of patience and digging but, your Alexander lived in a period he
would have generated a lot of paper documentation. Good luck with your research and keep
digging

Yes, His death records say "unknown" for parents and only tell me the name
of one of his sons, which I all ready knew.

I can relate to not being able to find someone that should be there. And I
suppose his death records in KS say parents unknown.

I have not found our Alexander in any census before 1870.
Most of my information comes from his pension papers, research other people
did, find a grave, some information our Mother gave me and Family Search.
If I could find our Alexander in an earlier census, you could probably hear
me screaming in CA.
Find a Grave shows that Albert S Mitchell died in Morgan Co., IN. Our
Alexander died in 1923 at the Leavensworts Soldiers Home in Kansas.

I haven't been following closely but want to mention that sometimes people
had two middle names in those days. Unless you have found Albert and
Alexander in two censuses or locations simultaneously, this might be the
case. People often went by one of the middle names, with the second middle
name most often used by family members. Mary Malinda Catherine was "Mary" in
public records but "Kate" to her family.
Another strange coincidence I have found: "Rebecca" became "Rachel" in
a
census. Was the census taker mis-remembering?

What is really interesting about the 1880 census James is 70 mother is 80.
She had him when she was 10? My guess mother Ann was James step-mother. 1870
there is an Albert Mitchell same household as James and Mary, he is 25.
Albert's age is same age as your Alexander.
I have been doing genealogy for around 20 years still have missing people.
My family was in Morgan Co, Johnson Co and Scott Co in the 1800's. I have
been to Indiana researching 3 times and getting ready to go again soon I
hope. I live on California. Where do you live? If I can assist you in anyway
let me know.

I am researching J. M. and Mary Ann Mitchell with a son A S Mitchell. They
are listed in the 1850 census in Washington Twp., Morgan Co,. IN.
In the 1880 census they are still there with Ann H S Mitchell (Mother).
I have found a marriage for James Mitchell and Mary Ann Scott in 1836.
I am hoping that the son A S Mitchell is our Great Grandfather Alexander
Scott Mitchell.
I would appreciate any relavant information.
