Yesterday, and again this morning before writing this message, I performed
the actions described in my first message. Step 1: enter
http://books.google.com in your browser. Step 2: In the search box at the
top of the google page, enter the title of the book. Step 3: depress the
"search books" button. A list of books appears. The first entry on the
book list is the book in question, but yes, that entry only leads to a
description of the book, not the text. Here is the tricky part: scroll
down to the FIFTH entry. Although the entry says it is page three of the
desired volume, clicking on the left picture link will indeed take you to
the full text of the volume.

List members who are pinching their pennies might want to spend a couple
of
minutes with google before they buy the CD version of the Indiana history
books recently touted on this list. If one enters
http://books.google.com
in their browser and then enters the title "1850 Indiana Gazetteer or
Topographic Dictionary of the State of Indiana" without the quotes, one
will
find the complete volume has been scanned and is available
for no charge compliments of google.

I am very interested in viewing this information, but do not see how to
preview its' contents. Could you be so kind as to talk me through the
steps.

There is no preview for this book. That means it has not been digitized on
google books. The information as to where to buy it or borrow it is
available. But, not the book.
