Elisabeth Carpenter--Registrar of Deeds of Lincolton, Lincoln County, NC
states in a letter: "The marriage bonds of this county show the marriage
of Charles Williams and Elisabeth Williams on July 30, 1817". They must
have spent the next 15 years in Lincoln Co.
The Family Bible records the births of their 6 children: David, Thomas,
twins - Margaret M. and Anna C., Joel, and Rebecca. (This bible is now
on display at the Cumberland Co, IL Historical Society's building in
Greenup, IL.)
In 1832, the family joined other families to make the long journey west
across
the mountains, taking with them all of the possessions they could
possibly
carry. They settled in Morgan Co, Indiana.
A picture of Charles Williams by Photographer A.R. Miller first listed in
the
year 1857 in Indianapolis is in possession of the family (had to be taken
from
the years of 1857 to 1861) since the year of Charles' death was 1861. He
is buried in Sand Creek Church Cemetery, near to his daughter Rebecca,
his son Thomas, and Thomas's 3 wives. Sand Creek Cemetery is about 3
miles east of Martinsville, Morgan Co, Indiana on Route 252.

The picture of Elisabeth Williams by the photographer show her having a
black
cap tied under her chin, white hair, dress looks like of taffeta material
with
a white collar. She was sitting very straight also.
This couple raised Sarah Jane and Margaret Ann Williams, daughters of
their
son Thomas, whose wife died when these little girls were just babies.
After Charles died Elisabeth moved to Illinois to spend the rest of her
days
with her 2 sons, David and Joel, their families, and these two
grand-daughters. The family brought her from Indiana to Illinois in a
covered
wagon.

David Williams was 14 years old when his family left Lincoln County,
North
Carolina and moved near to Martinsville, Morgan Co, Indiana. Taken from
an obituary notice from their son Joel: "David and his wife came from
Indiana and settled 2 1/2 miles north of Greenup (Cumberland Co, IL)
just before the Civil War, and assisted in clearing the land and making
it possible for future generations to enjoy the full fruits of
civilized life."

Thomas Williams was 13 years old before their family left Lincoln Co., NC
and
would have remembered his early years spent there, and the long
trip to Morgan County, IN.

Margaret and Harrison Askew had 9 children and lived on what was called
"Askew
Hill" about 3 1/2 miles north of Martinsville, Indiana. They lived all of
their married life there and "Meg", as she was affectionately known,
spent her
long 36 years of widowhood there and raised her children, as well as some
of
her grandchildren. Her youngest child was only 7 when Harrison died.

Joel was only 8 years old when his parents left North Carolina for Morgan
County in Indiana. This must have been an exciting trip for a boy this
age,
with his 2 older brothers, older twin sisters, and 1 younger sister.
(Source of much of the above information is Lois Williams and Eleanor
Cutright
who submitted a portion of it for the "History of Cumberland Co
1843-1993".
