1999 Treat Gathering
The Gathering in 1999 will be held in Fort Smith, Arkansas, the gateway
to the Real Wild, Wild West. This historic city is located at the
junction of the Arkansas and Poteau Rivers, on the border between
Arkansas and Oklahoma. Much of its early history revolved around keeping
law and order in this key border area into the Indian Territory. As part
of our conference we will be touring the Fort Smith National Historic
Site which includes the site of the 1817 fort, the old commissary
building from the 1840s fort, as well as Judge Isaac Parker's Courthouse
and Jail. There are many other museums and sites of interest in the Fort
Smith area. Some of you may be interested in using the excellent
genealogy collection in the Fort Smith Public Library, located just
blocks from Judge Parker's Courthouse. This collection focuses on
Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma.
Our Saturday conference will also feature lectures of interest to TREAT
family members and special times just to visit with "long lost" cousins.
A database(s) will be available during this time to aid persons tracking
their TREAT ancestors and cousins.
The Saturday evening banquet will be a buffet featuring deep fried
catfish filets and sliced round of beef, with a variety of salads and
side dishes. The cost for this banquet is $16.50 per person (children 5
and under are free, 6-12 are $8.25). The after dinner speaker will be
Nell Treat Johnson, President of the Treat Family Association. She will
be talking to us about Richard Treat, the original Treat immigrant to
this country.
On Friday before the conference, an informal dinner reception will be
held at the Golden Corral restaurant for those arriving in town early.
SPECIAL SUNDAY BONUS EVENT
For those staying over into Sunday, a daytrip into the beautiful Ozark
Mountains is planned. We will drive to the site of Treat, AR, and visit
the property once owned by Andrew Jackson Treat, ancestor of many of the
Treats now living in the Fort Smith area. The trip will also include a
visit to the old Treat Cemetery, as well as the gravesite of A J Treat
at the Annie's Chapel Cemetery.

ABOUT THE ASSOCIATION
The Treat Family Association was formed more than a decade ago to bring
together TREATs from all across the country and from every TREAT
ancestral line. In addition to sponsoring this conference, the
association sends out newsletters every year which provide opportunities
for members to place genealogical queries to other members and exchange
information. The association welcomes memberships from all conference
attendees. The annual membership dues are currently $5.00 per person.
