Hi Betty,
I understand what you are saying and regret you didn't get help with the genealogy
section. Our library needs more funding for staff, but there have been cutbacks instead
of increases. I do want to clarify, though, that we have lots of research materials
available, even for ancestors who were in Morgan County before 1850.
If anyone has suggestions to help researchers work independently, please send them along.
We can discuss it at our MCHGA board meetings. Maybe a printed guide of some kind would
help.
Best of luck at Fort Wayne, where you can find lost ancestors.
Sharon

It was not my intention to insult anyone regarding my
comment " I did not find much information on my family" at the
Morgan Co Library. But, let me say when traveling from out
of state time is very limited. I would spend my time more
wisely next trip. That would include isolating my research
to one facility as Fort Wayne library.
If my family had lived in Morgan Co after
1850 I may have been more succesful in my search.
Since my research was before 1850's I didn't find what I was
looking for.
Yes, I was on my own the times I visited the library
. It took a lot of time trying to figure out
what was available. If I had known David Ross
could have assisted me I would have asked him for
help. As it was the desk told me they didn't know
anything about the genealogy section nor when anyone would be in
that did know about this section.
Again I apologize if my assistance offended the
library. I was attempting to assist a researcher that was
not a resident of Morgan County.

I hate to hear someone came to Morgan County and
didn't find much. I think the Morgan County Public Library has a
very good genealogy department. Researchers may feel lost
because we only have a part-time employee in tha department.
However, it doesn't take too long to figure out what can be
found where.
We are fortunate to have a head librarian, David Ross, who is a
genealogist himself. During his tenure the department has been
improved and expanded. If you have an MCPL library card, you can
get HeritageQuest from home. This tool is supported in part by
the Morgan County History and Genealogy Association.
Almost all of Morgan County public records were filmed by the
LDS, so Morgan County research can begin anywhere you find an
LDS FHC. Most Morgan county officials are very helpful; where
they are less welcoming, many county records were placed on
microfilm. These are available either at the MCPL or in the
microfilm office in the basement of the Court House.
In recent years MCHGA has worked with the MCPL to re-organize
and re-shelve the reference books to make research easier. One
row of bookcases contains strictly Morgan County resources. New
Indiana and general references have been added to the
collection. One file drawer of microfilm contains family
histories and information brought in when the LDS was filming.
That drawer is a treasure trove.
The Mooresville library is also available for persons looking
for ancestors who lived in mostly northern Morgan County. I see
research in Morgan County as favorable, when one's ancestors
have left some public records to find. Of course we all have
those elusive ancestors who slipped into a county and left
without leaving much evidence of their having been there.
