Looking for information on the ancestry and family of Irason TAYLOR of Virginia, Morgan
Co., IN, Rives (now St. Clair) Co., MO, and Edgar, Clark and Coles Counties, IL.
:)
Irason TAYLOR Sr. (Sr. only to distinguish him from the son by the same name) was born
about 1793 in Maine, and died possibly in Ohio during the War of 1812 (which lasted from
June 1812 to Feb 1815). He married Rosanna (maiden name may be OSBORN/OSBORNE) possibly in
1812, as their only known child Irason Jr. was born in 1813. (Irason and Rosanna may have
had a daughter named Abigail TAYLOR who married William S. CRAIL.) Censuses state possible
birthplace for Rosanna (Rosena/Rosina/Roccinah) to be Maine, New Jersey or Connecticut. It
is believed Rosanna may also be the same person as Rosena TAYLOR who married Ralph
CARTRIGHT, Rosina CUTRIGHT who married Peter WINKLER, and Roccinah WINKLER (b. 01 Aug
1788, d. 06 Apr 1873) who is buried in the Mahalasville Methodist Cemetery at
Mahalasville, Indiana.
:)
Irason TAYLOR Jr. (b. 1813), son of Irason, Sr. and Rosanna, settled in the Martinsville,
Morgan Co., IN area where he married in 1831. He is then enumerated in the 1840 census of
Rives Co., MO (his daughters Roccena and maybe Caroline were born there). We have been
unable to find him in an 1850 census, but he is again in Morgan Co., Indiana in the 1850s,
and then in Clark Co., IL in the late 1850s as he in Clark Co., Illinois in the fall of
1857. He is enumerated in the 1860 and 1870 censuses of Clark County, IL, and in the 1880
census of Coles Co., IL. It is in the 1880 census of Coles Co., IL that Irason says both
his parents were born in Maine. He is still alive in 1887 as "Bro I TAYLOR" is
mentioned in the Clarksville (Illinois) Baptist Church business minutes of the
"Saturday before the 3rd Sunday in April 1887." He is still living as of March
1888, as his son Francis M. TAYLOR'S Civil War Pension records that are in the
National Archives contain a document titled "Dec!
laration
For The Increase Of An Invalid Pension" dated March 05, 1888. And one of two
witnesses to this document is IRASON TAYLOR, who was residing at Brocton, Edgar Co., IL at
that time. This document indicates that Irason was still living as late as March 1888 when
he was 75 years of age.
:)
Irason's first of three marriages was to Sinah Lucinda SEALS (SEALES) (b. 1812 IN) on
June 25, 1831, in Morgan County, IN. Their children were:
1) William Harrison, b. 22 Jan 1832 IN, d. 29 Aug 1907 CO (married [1] Polly Ann STINE,
[2] Sarah Elizabeth [Elizabeth P.] ARMSTRONG; William and Sarah are my
great-grandparents),
2) Rachel, b. 25 Apr 1835 (IN?), d. 11 Apr 1856 IN (married James HATLEY),
3) unnamed son (John?), b. cir 1835-1840,
4) Caroline, b. 30 Aug 1838 MO or IN, d. 12 Jan 1929 IL (married Isaac SPARKS),
5) Roccena, b. 11 Jul 1843 MO, d. 11 Aug 1910 IL (married [1] Francis M. ASHLEY, [2]
William H. McFARLAND [McFARLING], [3] Nathaniel R. MOUNTJOY (MTJOY),
6) Francis Marion, b. 1846 IN (married [1] Amanda APPLEGATE, [2] Annie R. KEIFER),
7) Peter J. (listed as "James P. TAYLOR" in William W. SEALS' probate
record), b. 1850 IN,
8) Joseph, b. 1852 IN (married Martha M. NELSON. On marriage license, "Martha
STEEPLETON" was written in but marked out with "Martha NELSON" written
below it, indicating she was Mrs. Martha NELSON, a widow whose maiden name was STEEPLETON
[Joseph's obituary says STAPLETON]). A marriage license shows that Martha STEEPLETON
had married James NELSON on 09 Sep 1874).
:)
Sinah L. (SEALS) TAYLOR'S father was William W. SEALS. William's probate record is
in the Edgar County Courthouse in Paris, Illinois and it lists his children and some of
his grandchildren. His heirs were Alexander SEALS, Even (Evan) SEALS, Francis SEALS,
Rachel CANADY (KENNEDY), Mrs. (Eliza Jane) COOK wife of Peter J. COOK, Mrs. (Sinah
Lucinda) TAYLOR wife of Ireson (Irason) TAYLOR, and Elizabeth BURNS. The children of
William's deceased daughters Mrs. Sinah Lucinda TAYLOR and Mrs. Eliza Jane COOK were
also mentioned in the probate record. This probate also mentions William's
great-granddaughter Caroline HATLEY, granddaughter of Sinah Lucinda SEALS TAYLOR.
:)
Irason TAYLOR Jr., married 2nd (Mrs.?) Angeline REISINGER in Illinois in 1864, and 3rd
Mrs. Sarah Ann BRYANT in Illinois in 1879. The names of Irason Jr.'s parents are
listed on his 1879 marriage license to his third spouse Mrs. Sarah Ann (JACK) PARKER
BRYANT. Irason was also Sarah's third husband.
