Hi Janel,
Yes it appears we are indeed cousins. My Aunt Grace (Bange) is buried alongside her
husband Clyde Marley at Hall Cemetary. Their daughters still live in Monrovia, but we
knew there were some Bange's around Hall. Seems as though the Bange name is dying
out mostly due to the fact that our Bange's seemed to produce many daughters and very
few sons.
As for more information on Franklin Bange, I posted nearly all of what I've been able
to locate on my great great grandfather. He apparently was called Franklin, but was born
Lewis Franklin Benge (later changed spelling to Bange.) I believe he was born in 1830-31
although the writing on the census records made it difficult to tell his age) in either
Clay or Madison County Kentucky. He appears on the Indiana Census in 1850 along with
another male (relative?) S.F. Benge. They were living in shared cabins in Martinsville,
IN working as hired hands. Initially, I thought he was related to the Clay Co, KY Benges
(King David, etc.) but have been told repeatedly by the folks on the Benge mailing list
that even though the name is the same it can't be the same person since he lived and
died in the Clay Co. area. However, I'm convinced our line is somehow linked to the
Clay or Madison, KY lines and just need time to find the linkage. I can find no record of
Franklin's death in Ind!
iana. He disappears from the census before 1880 while the family was living in
Martinsville, IN. In 1880 Elimeter lists herself as a widow, but if Franklin died in
Indiana at or before age 49 there is no record of it in our family information.
As noted in my original post Franklin married Elimeter Green. The oldest son, Marion,
predates their wedding date so it's possible he was from an earlier marriage Franklin
had or was simply born out of wedlock. They had 4 sons (Marion, Gallant, James and
Charles) and 1 daughter (Ollie).
My great grandfather, Franklin's son, Gallant Sylvester Benge/Bange was born and died
in Morgan Co, near Martinsville. He is buried in the Mooresville Indiana Cemetary along
with his wife, Luella (Oliver) and many of their children including my grandmother,
Georgia (Bange) Vice.
Would love to know any additional information you have on Marion Bange or any links to the
Clay Co or Madison Co, KY lines. Hope you find some of this information useful.
