Joyce,
It looks as if your hunch was right about Matthews. Noah Major's book (and MCHGA
reprint) "Pioneers of Morgan County" has a section on The Matthews and Drury
Neighborhood. It's a book MCHGA reprinted last year. The settlement was reportedly
named for George Matthews. It was located 1/4 NE of present Centerton. There are several
sentences about George Matthews in regard to his migration to Indiana. Majors knew the
people he was writing about, which always adds something. The neighbors are then
mentioned in some detail. Did you mention the surname Cox? It's one of those
mentioned. Towards the end of this almost-four page account of the neighborhood, George
Matthew Jr is mentioned, also Judge Hiram Matthews. There are 3 3/4 pages about all the
people who lived there.

Subject: Re: [INMORGAN] [INMORGAN) George Matthews and Sons early settlers of Clay Twp.
To: inmorgan(a)rootsweb.com
On the web site
genealogytrails.com I found some history of Clay
Twp. It said there that George Matthews arrived in April of 1820
with his three sons John, Alfred and Calvin. There were only
three families in Clay Twp. when they arrived and they lived
east of White Lick Creek. George is credited with building
the first cabin west of White Lick Creek. George and his wife
Delpha are buried in the Centerton Cem. Calvin who was my gt.
gt. gt. grandfather is credited with laying out the village of
Centerton in 1854. His father George had died in 1852 and his
land was divided between Calvin and his brothers.
The family goes back to a Thomas Matthews a Quaker
who emigrated from England to Delaware between 1654 and 1686.
I haven't checked the MM you suggested but I will try and
do that soon. When I saw that there was a ghost town named
Matthews in Morgan Co. I looked for it on the county maps on
your site but didn't find it. Can't help but be a little curious
about it.
Thaks for the help. Joyce

Joyce,
I'm not familiar with Mathews, so I am going to ask others in
our organization. Quakers generally settled in Brown and Monroe
Twps instead of Clay. Have you checked the BLM database to see
if they came into one of those townships and later moved?
Another resource for you are the Monthly Minutes for West Union
and White Lick MM records. You would need to get those on
microfilm. Have you checked Hinshaw and/or Heiss?
