Terry,
There was a fire with limited damage. You have made me realize it would be a service to
everyone to pull together a list of what was damaged...if possible..and put it on the
MCHGA website.
A marriage book appears to be missing, but we don't know that it was actually burned.
We have one or two charred record books in the MCHGA archives.
Most Morgan County records are intact. You can research fully at the Recorder's
office and Auditor's office. You can't get access to many early record books at
the Clerk's office due to limited space. Most, if not all, of those records have been
microfilmed and are available at the Morgan Co Public Library in Martinsville. I
haven't personally tried to get a probate packet from the Clerk's office and
don't know if it can be done. The probate order books are on microfilm, at least.
Tax duplicates from the 1840's are available at the MCPL, which has lots of resources
for you (Morgan Co books, the Maguire collection of obits, family files, etc.) Friday
nights they close at 5:30 but are open on Sunday afternoon. There is no full time staff
person, however, so you will just have to check out all shelves and drawers.
Our health department limits research strictly by recent state laws which require you to
show proof of relationship before you can get a record. They interpret this to mean one
generation, apparently. I couldn't get my granddaughter's birth certificate, for
example, on behalf of her mom. My son had to do it.

How early do the records in the Morgan County Courthouse
begin? I was
thinking I had heard there was a fire at one time, but I'm not
sure and I
don't know if the records were all destroyed if there was one.
I would appreciate any guidance anybody could give me for
researching in the
courthouse. I plan to make a trip there in July and would
like to know what
to expect and what might be available for researching.
Thanks!
Terry Harper
