Hello,
I'm seeking information on Henry Wich bn germany 1869,lived in Martinsville,Morgan county,Indiana from bef 1910 until his death before 1930.Henry owned a bakery there in Martinsville and I have a copy of a story written about the bakery "Where Martinsville gets its bread" this is dated 16 July 1911 from the "Indianapolis Star". Henry must have died before 1930 because he is not listed with his second wife Augusta, which is mispelled on the census "WECH". I'd like to know where he is buried, and when he died ,if there is a copy of an obit.I'm hunting any family members who may still be in the area. Henry's first wife was Barbara Dengler bn Germany and died in 1897 in Indianapolis. She left 1 living child,a girl, Laurie born in Indianapolis 1896.Barbara and infant son are buried at Crown Hill in Indianapolis. If anyone can help,PLEASE e-mail me at Stacy5449(a)aol.com.,Henry is my g-g uncle.Thank You,Stacy Mitchell-Ryan

WPA stands for Work Progress Administration....
initiated during FDR's 1st term...it was a program to
to provide work when our nation was still in the midst of
a terrible depression. Many parks and other public works
were created then...old records copied and put into book form,
etc.
The state required by law that birth and death records be kept from 1882 in Indiana. Of course, not many babies were born then in a hospital, and doctors filed the record when they got around to it....or didn't lose it....or maybe forgot altogether. For death records, if no doctor attended the death, there was no doctor to file a report. I have found death records missing from the 1910-20 era, when the subject had a known burial. After 1900, reporting was more uniform.
The Maguire records at the MCPL cover many early years, don't know if they cover the 1880's, when a few newspapers were mentioning deaths in community items or obits.

I am looking for the death date of a June Gwin and a Nina Gwin. This is their maiden names and I don't know their married names. So that can be difficult. I am posting in Morgan, Brown, and Monroe counties also. I do know that June was the last one to pass and that was a couple of years ago. But that is it. Thanks, Lavania

Some school records for Morgan County schools are on microfilm from 1886 at the Morgan County Public Library. They are scattered years. There may also be unarchived school records in the basement archives at the library. Morgan County History and Genealogy Association is working on unarchived material at this time. It's a slow process, and we have a lot to go.

There are, in fact, some scattered Morgan County school records on film at the MCPL. They are for various years from 1886 through 1924. See their webpage for contact information. Also, MCHGA is in the process of archiving materials that have been brought in to the library, and we understand school records may be among these. It's a long, slow process and may not be completed this Spring.

There is also another possiblity, I know that in the early 1900 Children did not go to school as often as later, but my mother never had a birth certificate when she was born either, although her birth was recorded, they just never made a birth certificate, but she needed proof of her age when she filed for SSI, So I wrote to the school where she grew up and they had a record of her being registered in first grade, this was in the 1930s tho, I don't know if you could find something that far back, but its a thought, Good luck, Sue

I do not know if the Obit records at the Mooresville library include the Maguire books information. The Court House fire was limited, with most Morgan Co records surviving. It was mostly confined to one safe in one office. I would agree that vital records prior to 1915, and even later, were spotty due to doctors not filing reports, no doctor being called, etc. The Indiana State Library has a microfilm that the Morgan Co Public Library does not have of delayed births; therefore, I believe the record was generated at the Indiana Board of Health. The Morgan Co Public Library has copies of Morgan Co records that have been microfilmed.

If you are referring to the obituaries available through the Mooresville Public Library "Obituary Finder," I already have those.
I have made two trips to Morgan County and have learned:
There was a courthouse fire in 1876--which was the year my great grandfather was born.
The vital records prior to abt 1900 are very spotty (I was told this by the person in the board of health office) and there were no entries listed for anyone in my family.
Strangely enough the WPA records do list my great uncle (son of AJ Goodpaster III), who was born in Morgan County in 1904.
The only way I discovered the name of my ggrandfather's mother was by looking through the probate files on microfilm, which list him as Andrew J. Goodpaster, minor heir of Nancy J Goodpaster. His aunt Lou did act as his guardian.
The reason I ask about these is that I know that my paternal grandparents both filed for delayed birth certificates about 1940, one in Muncie IN and one in Texas. They needed them to apply for Social Security numbers. This was a pretty common phenomenon between about 1939 and 1945.
Generally, someone who was present at the birth (a parent or older sibling, perhaps) would go into court and file an affidavit attesting to the birth of the person.
Additionally, the Indiana State Library has listed under Indiana County Records for Morgan County: Delayed Birth Registrations. Has anyone else ever seen these?
I am starting to feel as though they are a myth, except that I have the one for my grandfather that was filed in Muncie (in the county court).
Thanks, Sarah Nesnow
