Burial* aft 13 Dec 1861, Crab Orchard, KY; The 33rd Indiana had a very tough first Winter in 1861. After a forced night march in the rain from southeastern Kentucky to Crab Orchard, Kentucky in late 1861, hundreds in the regiment became very ill. The regiment was so decimated that they were relieved of active field duty for a time. Many died and were buried at Crab Orchard, the location of their graves lost for all time. However, quite a few of the 33rd were sent home to be buried as well. Charles B. Mallory was probably buried at Crab Orchard. I haven't been able to find his grave in Owen County.
