Merrifield Pottorff married Jennette (Nettie) Mallory in 1871, Morgan Co. IN. They had a son (Zara ? D.) abt 1874. The 1880 census has the family in Ashland Twp., Morgan Co., IN.
The 1900 and 1910 censuses have Merrifield and Nettie in Gosport, Owen Co., IN. In addition Nettle's brother Murray Mallory is living with the couple. By 1920 Nettie is widowed; the census shows Nettie as head of the household with brother Murray still living there. I am seeking any additional information on this family. Thanks in advance.

For some time I have been rather desperate in seeking last information about my ggrandfather Robert Waters(Walters) and his wife Frances Norton Waters. She died before 1850 for she does not appear on that census for either Morgan or Owen counties. I found a death notice for Robert in the Martinsville Republican that said he died at age 104 at the home of his son Richard 21 Sept. 1855. It further noted that an extended obit was forthcoming. I checked the issues for Sept, Oct, Nov, and found nothing. I was out of time because my return flight was at hand. During my stay in Martinsville I checked the actual Walters Cemetery and the Stierwalt Cemetery and the lists in the library for many others. Nothing. Any information and assistance would be greatly appreciated. William Walters.

SPLENDID LITTLE BOY KILLED WHILE HUNTING
George, ten-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Brill, of Evansville, was instantly killed, Saturday, by a gunshot wound through the heart.
Mr. Brill, his brother-in-law and the boy were hunting squirrels. The brother-in-law and the boy were out of the machine. Mr. Brill was seated in the machine. The boy was attempting to take a gun out of the machine, pulling the muzzle toward him. In some manner the gun was discharged and the boy dropped dead.
He was a bright, manly fellow, the namesake of his uncle, George W. Brill, of Danville. Mr. and Mrs. John R. Brill have three daughters and a son surviving.
Evansville papers give details of the tragedy. The story told by Mr. Wigginton, the uncle, follows:
“As we passed a woods, we saw a squirrel, which I killed. We had gone a little farther when Mr. Brill said we might find another squirrel if we looked in the woods. I walked a short distance from the road, and saw an owl sunning itself in a knot hole. Believing that George would like to shoot at the bird, I called for him to bring the rifle.
“The guN was lying on the floor of the car between the front and rear seats. Mr. Brill was sitting in the front seat. The muzzle of the gun was pointing toward the side on which the door was open. George, boy like, took hold of the barrel, pulling it towards him. The hammer of the rifle caught on a part of the car, causing it to discharge.
“I heard the report, and could not help believing there had been an accident. I hurried from the woods to a place where I could see the car. I realized that George had been shot. I was within an arm’s length of him when his little body fell lifeless.
“There was no struggle. He made no cry. I picked up his limp body and placed it in the car. Mr. Brill seemed not to realize what had occurred. He drove toward the state road, and turned toward town. The ride seems like a dream to me. We turned toward the city on the state road. At the first house we stopped. Henry Meny, a mechanic at the George Grimm garage, and a good friend of Mr. Brill’s, was standing at the side of the road. We told him of the tragedy and he drove the machine to the city.”
Acquaintances of Mr. Brill discussed his relationship to his boys as being more than a paternal love. It was his habit to frequently talk of his sons with his friends.
On the night of Sept. 10, when his youngest daughter left for Indiana university, Mr. Brill said: “The last of our girls left us tonight. Just the boys remain. He referred to himself and his sons as “we men folks.”
“If George had been my son, I could not have loved him more,” declared Mr. Wigginton. “He was courteous and obedient. If he were told not to do a thing, we could feel assured that he would not do it.”

VERDICT WAS SUICIDE
Father Not Satisfied with Official Report and Will Investigate
The body of Harry Shipman, son of S.D. Shipman, was laid to rest at Avon last week, he having passed away at Bainbridge, Ohio.
Mr. Shipman lives in Morgan county and the message announcing his son’s death gave no details and he learned nothing until he arrived at Bainbridge. There he was informed that his son had committed suicide by shooting himself through the right temple with a 32-calibre revolver. It was stated that his son had been acting strangely, for one thing spending $32 in behalf of poor children on Christmas day. It was also said that he left a note saying that he was tired of life, but the note was not shown to Mr. Shipman, so he states, although he asked for it.
Mr. Shipman states that his son was found doubled up in bed with a cover over him, his right hand holding the revolver, with a little finger on the trigger and a bottle of chloroform in his right hand at his nostril. He was lying in a heavy feather bed on which were two comforts and a blanket all crumpled up in a wad, the bed clothing being very bloody.
Mr. Shipman said that he accepted the coroner’s version of the matter in order to obtain the body for burial but that he is not satisfied that his son committed suicide and will continue to investigate the affair.
His son was conducting a carriage and house painting business that was prospering, according to statements of Mr. Shipman. The following obituary was read at the burial:
“Harry Tennant Shipman was born near Avon, Hendricks county, Indiana, March 24th, 1891, and he died in Bainbridge, Ohio, Dec. 26, 1912, aged twenty-one years, nine months, two days. He was the fourth son of Sylvanus D. and Emma Tenant Shipman, was one of eight children, two of whom survive. He spent his early childhood near Avon and his early youth with his parents near Martinsville. The last year and a half he has lived in Bainbridge, Ohio. A short time ago he united with the Methodist Episcopal church of Bainbridge at and was at the time of his death a probationer in good standing. This is the fourth son of Mr. and Mrs. Shipman who has reached early manhood only to be taken away and our sympathies go out to the so sorely stricken parents and especially to the poor mother, who is too ill to be present at the last sad rites.”
Can anyone help with a census look up for the following families? Any help

Lisa, I have tried to avoid abusing your kind services, but your reference to a Brown pushed me over the edge. :-)
My most significant question mark in my wife's lineage is one Sarah Delilah Brown. Sarah Delilah Brown married Andrew Jackson Turley on 16 DEC 1872. My notes do not indicate where, but I am guessing Morgan County, Indiana. She died on 23 OCT 1916. Children of Sarah Delilah Brown and Andrew Jackson Turley include
Arthur D. Turley b: 16 JUN 1873
Orpha F. Turley b: 15 AUG 1875
Elsie Dennis Turley b: 26 MAR 1877 in Indiana
Elizabeth Turley b: 9 JUN 1878
Martha Turley b: 19 APR 1881
Rebecca Turley b: 11 APR 1882
Hicklin David Turley b: 27 JUN 1884
Jennie Blanche Turley b: 6 MAY 1887

I have only been able to travel to Morgan County once to research and I spent that day blissfully in the Mooresville library. Unfortunately, I found nothing on that line.
Does this ring any bells regarding your research? Does this match with any other reader's data?

Well, I have done a little research on this marriage certificate of Albert and Ann Brown. It is recorded in Morgan County marriage book 4, page 76. From the microfilm the names look to me to be Albert Brown and Ann Weesner.
I found in some existing Brown research at the library that Albert and Ann Brown had 6 children: Stella born July 1892, Clara born August 1894, Ivy born December 1895, Herman born October 1897, Ray born October 1899, and an unnamed female born November 1901. Albert's parents are listed as George W. and Anna J. Brown.
Albert Brown is listed in the 1900 and 1910 census as living in Gregg Township of Morgan County.
I found a couple of birth notices in the newspaper and one death notice of a child. It is dated Feb 16, 1906 and states that "The infant child of Albert Brown was fatally scalded last week." The birth notices are listed in the Gasburg, Indiana column. Gasburn is in Gregg Township, Morgan County.
A search for the surname Weesner resulted in only one lead so far. I found an obit for a Josiah Weesner in the vertical files dated January 1899. It lists him as a member of the Friends church. The obit also says that he had a son named John Weesner who is now deceased.
I have not searched the Friends Church records yet, but plan to do so on my next trip to the library.
Surely, out of all the Browns and Weesners, we should be able to find some living descendants in this area.
I just love playing detective!
Will let you know when I find out more,
Lisa
