LouAnn,
Sounds like a juicy bit of family history. I just wish I could be of more help to you. Finding something that old is going to be a problem. Most of our records in the library just don't go back that far. Our birth records in Morgan County begin in 1882. I searched the microfilm of the Probate Records for 1823, but found nothing. I also searched the Marriage Record Index for 1850 - 1920 for Irena Morrison to see if she was married in Morgan County. I did not find her name listed. I also searched a cd that the library has of pre-1850 marriages, with no luck.
Next time I'm at the courthouse, I'll ask about the old divorce records. I have heard that they were recorded with the probate records, and another person said that they were recorded with the deed records. Neither one of these makes sense to me, so I'll check with the Recorder next time I'm over there.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help to ya.
Lisa

Hi.
I appreciate your offer. I have not heard back yet on this. If you happen to find anything about this particular cemetery that would be great. But please don't go out of your way looking for information though.
Thanks

Hi Lisa,
Thank you for your generous offer!! I have been trying to figure out how to find more information about an old divorce that I found in a printed index for Morgan County:
Sept. 1823 Thomas Morrison and Rachel Barnes Morrison were granted a divorce.
Do they have the divorce papers there? I want to know when and where they married, and anything else available. They had a daughter Irena Morrison born about 1820. I would like to know her birthdate if it tells.
I know only that Rachel was born approx. 1802 in New York, to Benjamin and probably Hannah (his wife in 1820s) Barnes. I know nothing about Thomas Morrison except his name and that he was supposedly born in England, went back there and married again when he heard mistakenly that Rachel had died, came back with new wife and kids, and Rachel divorced him!
I would also like to know if there is anymore information about Benjamin Barnes in probate or land records. He disappears from census records by 1830. He bought land in Morgan County on 5 Sep 1820: T 13, R 1 E, section 36, W half of SE qtr, 80 acres. Hannah bought on 20 Sep 1836 T 12, R 2 E, section 27, N half of NE qtr, 80 acres. They had several children according to the 1820 census, 4 daughters and 2 sons. I only know 3 daughter's names, nothing else: my Rachel who married Thos Morrison and Daniel Regan, Jemima who married Wm Speaks, and Marilla who married Arnold Westfall.
I have posted here before looking for anyone that knows anything about these Barnes or Morrison families, but have had no luck.
Thanks again,
8^)
LouAnn

Hello fellow Morgan County, Indiana researchers,
I've been busy here and haven't had the time to write, but I have read all your posts.
Several from this Board have contacted me to ask if I would do lookups. I would be glad to do a simple search for no charge when I'm at the library doing my own research. For example, if you know that the person you are looking for was married in Morgan Co. between certain dates and need a copy of the marriage record.
I am also available for a reasonable hourly rate if you need more specific research done or need more than a couple copies made. I will also do cemetery site searches and take pictures of the stones for you for a reasonable fee.
Let me know how I can help in your research of Morgan County.

I'm confused. Have you already searched the census for those years or do you need someone to help with that? I'd be glad to do a quick lookup while I'm at the library.

Several Rowlands are listed in my Rootsweb collection. My wife descends through David Rowland - Elizabeth Rowland - Elizabeth Ragland - Edmund Clark. Until Edmund Clark, this line was located in Clark County, Kentucky or further east. Edmund Clark was Hendricks County sheriff. I believe that others of this family moved to Morgan County. The data is available directly at:

and can also be accessed indirectly thru

If you see any errors or can provide any additional information, please let me know. I tend to be over-inclusive, rather than focus on absolutely verified information. So, take anything with a grain of salt, especially if no sources are listed. I would be interested in any Rowland information that you might be willing to share.

Am attempting to determine if Samuel Joseph Wharton, born 1840 somewhere in Indiana, was a part of any of the Wharton families listed in the Morgan county, Indiana censuses as listed above. In 1860 he is found in the Story county, Iowa census living with Mrs. Elizabeth Groseclose and her young children. Elizabeth also born in Indiana and may be connected to Jacob Groseclose found in Indian Land Grant sales of 1835. Please contact TATWHARTON(a)aol.com directly.

I am assuming that you are naming counties from Indiana. My Grandmother is a Rutan and she has limited memory of her Rutan heritage but she remembers her Grandfather on her mother's side, Edward Rutan who lived in Morgan Co. He was married to a Inola Maye Clark. Edward and Inola had at least one daughter who's name was Estella Rebecca Rutan, born around 1903. This was the mother of my Grandmother. I don't know what other information I can give. Email me if you have any more questions.

Looking for Dudley Curl, believed died in Indiana.
Known to have leased a farm in Monroe County in 1820 from his son John Curl but was in IN in the area by 1818. Wife, Penelope turns up in MO in 1829 alone so Dudley must have died between 1820-1829, Smallpox epidemic? Any information on him gratefully received. This is my brick wall!

The only similiarity I see is that you and I each had a James Jones Morgan born in TN. in our families. Mine was born abt. 1817-1819 and married Sarah Clary in 1839. He had a son, Calvin, and may have had a daughter but it is not recorded.
