Does anyone have a copy of the "History of Morgan County, IN" who would be willing to do a look-up for the family of John Hodges or Joseph Easter? This favor would be greatly appreciated as they are my "brick walls". Thank you, "PJ" at bigwayne(a)preferred.com.

I think we're on the right track! Yes, I would love any information you have because I have very little. It would not surprise me if Levi died in California because his daughter Rebecca and her husband Samuel Lee Dalton started out west in 1863 and ended up in California. I look forward to hearing from you!

Julie,
If she died in Indianapolis, then the record will be in Marion County, not Morgan County.
Check the GenWeb page for Marion County. They should have the address and requirements you will need to obtain a death certificate.

Julie,
The Morgan County Public Library in Martinsville has a lot of the old funeral home records. You could post a message on this board requesting a lookup, or write to the library directly. They also have all of the Morgan County cemetery records.
The Morgan County History and Genealogy Association has a link to the library on thier web site (as well as lots of other useful stuff).

Hi Tom,
The entries in the 1850 Morgan County, Gregg Twp. Census are as follows:
Joseph Rhodes, 58, born NC
Elizabeth, 54, NC
Joseph, 23, IN
Martha, 19, IN
Solomon Brown, 29, KY
Mary, 29, IN
Joseph, 10, IN
Sarah, 7,IN
Margaret, 4, IN
Sally, 7/12, IN
I suspect that the Cass County, MO family is the same one, but I would like to see the wife’s name in the 1860 census. Elizabeth Moser is certainly the correct wife for Joseph Rhodes, and she should appear on that census, unless she died and Joseph remarried after 1850. The Moser/Rhodes marriages are well documented in Randolph County, NC. Joseph Rhodes married Elizabeth Moser, April 15, 1812. Isaac Haskett (her maternal uncle) posted the bond, so I’m really not sure who Sarah Frances is supposed to be.
If you do have the Township and page numbers for the 1860 Cass County census I would really like to have them.

This funeral home was located on East Pike St, was sold to the Fogleman family, then later closed down. I am not sure where you can get the records for it, but one of the Fogleman decendants works for the Morgan County Jail now. The original funeral home is now a residence and tax preparer's business and home.

Hi Gary,
I am looking into what became of Joseph Rhodes and trying to chase down his children. If he is the one born Oct 21, 1791 NC d. Sep. 12 1866 Cass Co, MO we are probably talking about the same family line. I have his wife listed as Sarah Frances Unknown b. 1790-1800 NC d. before 1860 near Harrisonville, Cass Co, MO, but that may have been from an LDS group that I found.
This Joseph Rhodes was the father of Mary Elizabeth Rhodes b. 1823 Morgan Co, IN d. Feb. 27, 1857 Emporia, Lyon Co, KS. She married Solomon Glory Brown Nov. 1, 1838 in Morgan Co, IN. "The Brown Genealogy" goes into a lot of detail about all the Brown lines which is extensive, but it also mentions Joseph Rhodes in the 1860 Cass Co, MO census.
The Brown family left Morgan Co, IN in the fall of 1855, wintered at Fort Scott, KS and continued April 1856 to Breckenridge (later Lyon) Co, KS. Their house was the only one in view of Emporia, Lyon Co, KS when it was laid out. I imagine Joseph Rhodes left about the same time and settled in Cass Co, MO where he and a probable son Joseph J. Rhodes bought property May 1857. Another daughter Mary T. Rhodes married James M. Blackburn Dec. 21, 1858 in Cass Co, MO.
I need the 1850 Morgan Co, IN, Gregg Twp census
Joseph Rhodes p.183B
Solomon Brown p.181
I used to have access to the census images, but not any longer.
Eventually I will get the probates for Joseph Rhodes and it may give some more information.

Seeking death information for Mary Ann Brown Lockhart. She was the wife of William Lockhart. She may have married a LaFary after he died. Her maiden name may have been Broom but is listed as Brown on the Early Indiana Marriage Database. All I have is a little newspaper clipping listing her as dying at 11:30 on Sunday at 1216 Earhart in Indianapolis and her age as 83. From Census info I have that would make her death about 1910. Most of her family was in Morgantown/Martinsville. Any help or suggestions appreciated.

Hi Bobbie Lou,
About the McGuire abstracts - as far as I know, the abstracts were were transcribed by Donald H. and Donna L. McGuire from Morgan County. I believe they are both still living. They took the microfilm from the Morgan County, Indiana newspapers and pulled birth, death, and marriage information from each page. They typed all the info, indexed it, and bound them and gave them to the library to be used by fellow genealogists for research purposes. They have only been available at the library for a very short time - just a few months. It is my understanding that these resources are not copyrighted material. I could not find an order form or phone number to call to see if these are available for sale. I will do some more checking and let everyone know. I do want everyone to know that this are just SUMMARIES or abstracts of the actual newspaper article. While Renee is typing the summaries word-for-word, this is NOT word-for-word from the actual newspaper article. So, while!
this is an excellent resource tool, you will want to make a copy from the microfilm of the original source.
Hope this helps,
Lisa Shireman
