I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me. I have been trying to find
out about an adoption in about 1889. I need the info to document the name
of my second great grandmother. She died young and i have not been able to
find any info or death certificate for her. She was a Miami Indian.
Her name was Elizabeth Dixon and her daughter, Cora, was adopted by
Mary Ann Dixon Sizer, Elizabeths sister.
Elizabeth died 6-21-1888. Elizabeth was married to John Godfroy.
I don't think Cora was his child. Elizabeth must of already had Cora when
she married John. When Elizabeth died, her sister Mary Ann and brother in
law, Moses Sizer took in all the children but only adopted Cora.
There was also a child named Homer( wah-pe-mun-wah or Omer) Godfroy.
I believe he was born about 1879-1883. The indian annuity rolls show
conflicting info. My Great grandmother was also the child of Elizabeth and
John Godfroy, Lavina Marie Godfroy, may also have been called Lauren.
(Noacquezaquah is Miami name). Lavina was born on 7-7-1882 and died on
3-24-1907. Unfortunately I have two generations of women that died young
and their children were raised by others. This has made searching very
difficult.
I have called the Miami co. courthouse many time and written to them many
times to try and find out if there is any records of the adoption of Cora by
the Sizers. If there is I would like to get the name of Coras mother. I have
not been able to get any response from my calls or letters. Any advice.
Thanks
Debbie
