Becky Miller and I did a cemetery restoration demo at Greenlawn Cemetery at
Mexico, Indiana for the Miami County Genealogy Society Wednesday evening.
We had about 20 people and they were awesome. We showed them the techniques
and they jumped in and got busy working. I think all together they dug up
at least 5 fallen and sunken markers and reset at least 1 or 2. The
cemetery is still active, however, the original part of the cemetery was
started by the Church of the Brethren. The cemetery board is going to be
making new bases for at least 3 tombstones that were dug up. We cleaned
poultice off of 2 stones that I did ahead of time and applied poultice to at
least 3 others. And 2 of the stones were drilled, pegged and epoxied. One
of those had its base leveled before it could be repaired.
We started at 6 p.m. and left the cemetery for our carry-in dinner about
8:15. It is amazing what can be done by willing volunteers in barely over 2
hours. It was great to have so much enthusiastic help and the dinner was
delicious, too. Sharon and Don Linn provided a nice air conditioned pole
building with cold soft drinks for the dinner that followed. Also, Sharon
Linn, MCGS member keeps the records for the cemetery which is still active.
Some of the older burials have records, such as "baby," "old man,"
"occupied." Some of the stones we worked on were not listed in the record
book, so the records are being updated and made more complete.
