For Immediate Release:
Lttle Bear of the Miami: The Frances Slocum Story, an
original musical drama, will be performed free of
charge at Jeffersonville, Indianas Riverstage,
located on Riverside Drive on July 8, 9, 15 & 16 at
8:30 P.M.
The musical version of this true story, written by
Bill Corcoran and Rick Neumayer, began in 1778, when
Frances Slocum was five years old. Members of the
Delaware tribe, intrigued by her red hair, captured
her from her Quaker parents home. Eventually, they
gave her to a couple from the Miami tribe who had
recently lost their own daughter. Young Frances, now
raised by Chief Strong Bear and his wife Meshinga, was
fully integrated into the tribe and given the name
Little Bear. They lived near what is now Fort Wayne,
Indiana. As a young woman, Frances found a wounded
Miami warrior hiding in a log; she nursed him until
he was healthy and the two married. He became Chief
Deaf Man. When she was in her sixties, Little
Bear/Frances was reunited with her Quaker family, but
chose to continue her life with the Miami.
RiverStage invites everyone to enjoy the music, dance,
happy times and sad times in the unusual life of
Frances Slocum. Admission is free, but bring a lawn
chair as no seating is provided.
