It totally depends on the county and the time frame.
Marriage records didn't have anything on them until
1906, most counties did "marriage supplements" from
1882-1906 which gave the parents, the number of
marriage, the age, the birthplaces and the marriage
place, but some counties threw those away (can you
believe they would do that? Cass County did, don't
know of any others right off) I'm not sure if Miami
County has those or not.
For death records it would give the name of the
deceased, their age, their cause of death, their
parents, where they died, the date of death, sometimes
it gives the duration of their illness, it also gives
the name of their physician, the name of their
undertaker and sometimes the place of burial- these
records can be extremely useful if the person took the
time to fill them all out and knew the information...
but if the people didn't know or didn't want to be
bothered with it you may get something like my
ggg-grandmother's death record "Mrs. Sutton, died
February x, 1899, attended by Dr. So-and-so" and
that's it (frustrating!) BUT overall they are
definitely worth the couple bucks it costs to order
them- and if they are charging more than $7 or so
order them from the state. It's the same record and I
think they only charge $5. It's usually best to get
them from the specific county but don't let them
overcharge you (Cass County charges $5 just to look
for the death record even if you actually GO to the
health department yourself- I went there and they
charged me $5 to look for it and the lady couldn't
even find the book- I had to point it out to her and
it costed me $5... don't get me started on that-
they're the worst!)

Subject: vital records
Hi Listers,
I am hoping someone can give me some advice on death
and marriage
records before I order a couple. In Wisconsin, where
I am located,
the birth, death, and marriage records all indicate
as to who parents
were, where they were from, witnesses (for deaths
and marriages),
sponsers (for births), dates of event, place of
event, etc. Are the
records in Indiana the same? I know that in Georgia
the records, if
any, are VERY brief -- not usually giving any detail
at all.
Any advice would be welcome! Thanks ahead of time.
Tanya
