Hello List Members!
I was hoping to pick your brains, as I am not familiar with Indiana State
Census's. I know here in Iowa, they had State census's
taken (I think I am remembering 1856....1865.) in between the Federal
Census's every decade. I am just assuming that Indiana
may have done the same thing.
Now the reason why this is important to my research.
In 1850 Miami Co., IN I found my g g grandparents Jacob Lair/Laire and
Elizabeth Craigh/Craig
1850 Indiana, Miami Co, Jackson Twnshp pg 190 census
Jac C. Lair, age 29, Laborer b. OH
Elizabeth, age 26, b. MO
Elizabeth, age 7? months b. OH
John Hilliard, age 31 ?War? Irland
In the 1860 Miami Co. Census, Jacob and Elizabeth are no longer in the
county.
BUT their 2 children are, and they are living apart with 2 diferent foster
families.
I have found my Jacob Lair/Laire back in the area where he was born and
raised
and was married, Scioto Co., OH until his death in 1901. I believe his wife
must have died
and he left the kids behind and took off. He was back in OH when he enlisted
13 Feb., 1865
and discharged at Columbus, Ohio Dec. 22, 1865.
I would like to find someone who could see if the Lair family could be found
in a State census after the 1850 Federal Census. I am curious to try to
narrow down when Elizabeth Craigh/Craig Lair/Laire died.
The names of the foster families the children went to are below.
The son Benjamin Franklin Lair b. 1851 went to live with a Benjamin and
Charlotte (Kessler) Bond.
They ran a store in the town of Amboy acording to Miami Co. infdormation.
Ben ran away from home as they were Quarker and he felt they were too
strict. Ben is my g grandfather.
The daughter Elizabeth (on the 1850 census), also Roenna (on the 1860
census) is living with the Roany (Welsh) and Evan Hosier family.
I believe Roany Hosier was the widowed (Mrs. Ellmore/Elmer) Roan (Craig)
Welsh and a sister to my Elizabeth. I have great interest in the
Evan Hosier family as well in any in between census....they were in Jackson
Twnship in Miami Co. in 1860.
Sooo...could anyone tell me if 1855 or 1865 (approx) State census's for
Miami Co., IN are in existance, and would anyone contact me
as I'd like to hire them to look up this info for me, on the the Lair's, the
Bond's and the Hosier's.
Thank you so very much! It has been quite a task to try to track down the
parentage of an orphan, believe me!
