I hope there is someone on this list that can help me locate some
information on my grandfather Oscar FIELDS. He was born and raised in
Macy, Miami
County. Parents are William and Hester FIELDS. I have some information on
them
but I am looking for more detailed information on Oscar FIELDS? military
record. Family folklore has that he was the first volunteer from Miami
County to
sign up for the Army when war was declared for the Great War (WWI). He may
have been a sergeant and may have spent some time serving in a training
camp
as an instructor in Ohio. Sorry that my knowledge is so sparse but I?m
hoping that someone in Miami County has kept track of the brave men who
served
from this county. I live in Texas so am not able to visit to search for
myself.
First I want to thank everyone who has responded to my request and I will
try to answer your questions here.
Oscar Butlar Fields was born April 22, 1892. and I already have all of his
and his father's US Census information.
Several of you have sent me a transcript of his WW I draft record which I
did not have, so Thank You!
For those of you suggesting that I request his service record from the
government, my father as already filed a form 180 and sent it to the National
Personnel Records Center (US military) in St. Louis. They responded that they
could not find any record of him and asked us to provide more information. If
we had more information we wouldn't need to request the info from them!!!
:-) I just think that his records were probably destroyed in the fire they
had and are now lost. I'm just hoping to be able to start piecing some of his
service record back together.
Thanks to all!
