I am appalled by the article!
Desecration of cemeteries is a crime that has become a National disgrace! It
is time that all citizens are educated about this ongoing desecration of
family heritage.
Parents need to take their children to the cemeteries to visit the final
resting places of their ancestors. In this way, future generations will develop a
respect for those who have gone before them and be instrumental in upholding
the law as it is, as well as enacting stricter legislation to preserve and
protect our Nation's cemeteries.
A visit to an old cemetery provides an unusual but potent way to learn how
our ancestors felt about death and life, and how they lived their beliefs. This
activity provides the opportunity to explore feelings about the subject,
demonstrate the life cycle of man, the history of our country, and how American
attitudes toward death and immortality have developed.
As a genealogist, I have visited many cemeteries that were a shock to the
senses. There is neglect, deterioration, and vandalism evident everywhere.
People should be encouraged to visit the cemetery where their loved ones are
buried. They, too, may be outraged to learn that their family memorials have been
toppled, vandalized, or are completely missing.
This is no longer "a shame," it is an "outrage!"
