Lucy A. Yarian was first married to Silas W. Seitner on 31 March 1881
per Miami County WPA marriage index. On the 1900 Perry Township census she
was back home with her father Andrew Yarian and listed as "widow", without
any children. According to the book Miami County, Ind. Cemeteries Vol 1.
Allen, Perry & Union Townships, page 87, Silas Seitner died October 26,
1881, aged 32 years 5 months and 7 days and is buried in the Tombaugh
Cemetery in Perry Township.
Lucy then married Levi T. Gaerte on 9 September 1900, again from
marriage index. Levi is listed in 1900 (Perry Township) as a "widower" and
with a birthdate listed as August 1849, born in Indiana.
Levi was married first to Susanna Hatfield on 6 October 1872, again from
marriage index. 1880 Perry Township census shows one child, Nora M. Gaerte,
born about 1877. From marriage index, Nora married Edward Leffel on 8
December, 1898. From the same Cemetery book above, page 154, the Gaerte
Cemetery, Section 1, Nora died 22 October 1899, aged 22 years 5 months and
11 days. The very next listing shows Susan Gaerte - wife of L. T. - born 7
November 1851, died 5 September 1895, aged 43 years 9 months and 28 days.
Now it gets interesting. There is also a sequential listing for Levi T.
Gaerte - 1847-1922. (Since the book is done by how the graves are laid out
and not alphabetically, it means that there are graves in a row for Nora,
Susan and Levi.) Gaerte Cemetery is also in Perry Township.
Levi (from 1860 Perry Townshp census which gives his birth state as
Ohio) was the son of John and Sarah Gaerte. John born about 1804 in
Pennsylvania and Sarah born about 1813 in Ohio. He had a sister Sarah, born
about 1852 and a brother Joseph, born about 1858.
The reason the first Gaerte cemetery listing is interesting is that in
the same book, page 172, for Gaerte Cemetery, Section 4, there is a listing
for two graves side by side - the first is Levi T. Gaerte - 1847-1922 and
the second is Lucy A. Gaerte, His Wife, 1861 - 1926. The book also notes
there are 2 foot stones: "Mother" and "Father". I didn't think
they would
have had any children due to the lateness of the marriage, but, sure enough!
The 1920 Perry Township census shows a daughter Dorothy M. It is almost
illegible, but the age appeared to be 15. Being the sick puppy that I am,
it bothered me that I couldn't read it, so I did a hand search of the 1910
Perry Township and found that Dorothy M. was listed as age 6. Lucy's entry
in 1910 also stated that she had given birth to1 child, and had 1 child
living.
Of course after all that searching, I smacked myself in the head for
stupidity, and checked the WPA birth records and found a female child born
to Levi Gurty and Lucy Yarion on February 4, 1904. So that would be
Dorothy.
Hope this helps!
