Billie M. Powell, 81, Peru, passed away at 2 a.m. Tuesday, March 15, 2005 at
Dukes Continuing Care Center, Peru.
She was born on May 11, 1923 in Miami County to Weldon H. and Bernice Lowry
Turner. She graduated from Peru High School in 1941, and married Gerald L.
Powell at First Presbyterian Church, Peru, on July 12, 1952. He preceded her
in death on March 4, 1996.
Powell was a homemaker and a member of First Presbyterian Church, Peru, Tri
Kappa Sorority, Peru, Peru Elkettes and the Miami County Republican Women.
Survivors include a son, Barton Powell and wife Jami, Peru; a step-son, Max
E. Powell and wife Barbara, Bellefontaine, Ohio; a sister, Mary Jane Wilson,
Kokomo; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband she was preceded in death by a step-son, Jerry R.
Powell, and three sisters.
The funeral service will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian
Church, Peru, with the Rev. John E. Hess and Pastor George Dinkel
officiating. Burial will be at Ever Rest Memorial Park, Logansport.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral
Home, 84 W. Main St., Peru. Memorial contributions may be made to First
Presbyterian Church or to the Elks Hoop Shoot Hall of Fame Fund

LaVerne E. Martin, 86

LaVerne E. Martin, 86, Peru, passed away at 1:12 p.m. Monday, March 14, 2005
at Dukes Memorial Hospital.
She was born Nov. 10, 1918 in Valparaiso to Philip and Lida Benham Hayes.
She married Leslie E. Martin Dec. 12, 1936, and he preceded her in death on
Oct. 24, 1981.
Martin worked in the laundry department of Dukes Memorial Hospital and also
was a homemaker. She was a member of First Christian Church, Peru.
Survivors include two daughters, Phyllis Anderson and Patricia "Pat"
Huddleston, both of Peru; two sons, Paul Martin and wife Elizabeth, Kokomo,
and Douglas Martin, Niles, Ill.; three brothers, Grant and Robert Hayes,
both of LaCrosse, and DeWight Hayes, Columbus; four sisters, Marie Dewey and
Inez Jenks, both of Michigan City, Eunice Trumbo, Goldendale, Wash., and
Edith Pratt, Wenatchee, Wash.; 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and
five great-great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband she was preceded in death by both parents; one son,
Chester Martin; four brothers and one sister.
The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Flowers-Leedy Funeral
Home with the Rev. George McCarty and the Rev. Jeremy Boszor officiating.
Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Peru. Friends may call from 4 to 8
p.m. Wednesday at Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be
made to First Christian Church, Peru.

Betty Ann McCutcheon Kleiman, 63

Betty Ann McCutcheon Kleiman, 63, Greenfield, passed away at 6:58 a.m.
Saturday, March 12, 2005 at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis.
She was born March 31, 1941 in Miami County to William and Julia Ann Hedges
McCutcheon. She attended school in Jefferson Township in Miami County, and
graduated from Bowling Green High School in Indiana.
Kleiman was the custodian at New Palestine High School, and a member of
Brandywine Community Church, Greenfield.
Survivors include a son, Anthony Kleiman, Greenfield; a daughter, Michelle
Shephard, Philadelphia; two grandchildren, Alexys and Douglas; a brother,
Rodney McCutcheon, Marion; and two sisters, Avis Click Glassburn, Denver,
and Mary Howard, Atwater, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, James, Wilfred and
Charles McCutcheon; and one sister, Edith Gambee.
The funeral service was Monday at Hendryx Funeral Home, Indianapolis, with
the Rev. Tony Winter officiating. Burial will be Thursday at 1 p.m. in Mount
Hope Cemetery, Peru, with graveside services by the Rev. Tony Winter.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Charles C. Havens, 82

Charles C. Havens, 82, Fairmount, formerly of Peru, passed away at 10:57
p.m. Monday, March 14, 2005 at his daughter's residence. He had lived in
Peru most of his life.
He was born Sept. 16, 1922 in Fairmount to Charles and Anna Earhart Havens.
He married Orvilla Votra, and she preceded him in death in 1982.
Havens retired from Square D in Peru after 38 years, and was a World War II
Navy veteran, serving on the USS Burns ship.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a life member of the Moose, Eagles,
Literary Aid, VFW and American Legion.
Survivors include two sons, Danny Havens, Wapakoneta, Ohio, and Charles C.
Havens and wife Jody, Panama City, Fla.; two daughters, Sherry Havens, Peru,
and Tayna Gardner and husband Rick, Fairmount; eight grandchildren, Chad,
Toby, Brandon, Chad, Jeremy, Jesse, Jim and Brandon; and nine
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; a daughter, Cathy Havens; a
son, Francis Havens; a brother, John M. Havens; and two sisters, Edith Tharp
and Estella Havens.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Flowers-Leedy Funeral
Home with Pastor John Thomas officiating. Burial will be at Mount Hope
Cemetery, Peru, with a military committal service. Friends may call from 4
to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. There will be a Masonic service at
the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Memorial contributions can be made
to the American Cancer Society.
