I am also from Peru...as a young child..I remember adults correcting people by saying
"chili (short i's ) is what you EAT,,Chili (2 long i's) is where people
live"
Being in Vegas now..I love this link. The Mount Hope pictures are wonderful. I do have
dates to send to you. You are doing great work. As for Donna..she is SO SPECIAL to me and
it is no suprise that she is helping . Deb

Lena,
I pronounce Chili with 2 long i's. Chie - lie. I am
pretty sure this is right, as I once worked the
switchboard that served Chili. (1969-1978)

I'm SOOO glad you do! The site is fantastic!
Question for all.... the folks I'm researching right
now lived in Chili, I've been pronouncing it like
the
food. My mom told me the other night that she had a
neighbor as a kid who came from there and said it's
pronounced "Chay-lay". After having been to
"Gal-VES-ton" (not "GAL-veston") and "Ver-SALES"
(not
Versailles "Ver-say"). I know the country is
pronounced "Chee-lay" so I'm guessing "Chay-lay"
isn't
much of a stretch :)
