Thomas W. Grose, 86

Thomas W. Grose, 86, Rochester, formerly of Peru, passed away at 3:43 p.m. Monday, July
25, 2005 at his residence following an extended illness.
He was born Oct. 22, 1918 in Peru to Walter D. and Mary Elizabeth Surber Grose. He married
M. Jane Young on March 15, 1952, and she preceded him in death March 28, 2003.
Grose was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, receiving two Purple Hearts and a Silver
Star.
He retired as assistant general manager/supervisor for the C/O Railroad in Cincinnati,
Ohio. He also was a member of the Peru Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite in Fort Wayne, Murat
Shrine in Indianapolis and Bass Masters Association, and enjoyed fishing.
Survivors include a daughter, Jan Lee Ginther and husband Tom, Rochester; a niece, Mary
Jane Hoffman, New Jersey; a nephew, Jeff Schmidt, Indiana; and a cousin, Hazel Shrader,
West Virginia.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a brother and a sister.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home, with Chaplain
Steve Fleck officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Peru, with a military
committal service. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of service Thursday at the
funeral home.
Max R. Shafer, 69

Max R. Shafer, 69, Marion, formerly of Peru, passed away at 10:44 a.m. Tuesday, July 26,
2005 at Marion General Hospital, Marion.
He was born July 22, 1936 in Peru to Chester and Myra M. Cattin Shafer.
Survivors include a brother, Dale "Red" Shafer, Nyona Lake; a sister, Betty
Haines, South Bend; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Herbert; and two infant brothers.
A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Shrock Cemetery, Miami County, with
Chaplain Steve Fleck officiating. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Flowers-Leedy
Funeral Home, Peru.
Agnes J. "Aggie" (Smith) Dowell, 66

Agnes J. "Aggie" (Smith) Dowell, 66, Madison, passed away at 10:24 a.m. Monday,
July 25, 2005 at University Louisville Hospital, Louisville, Ky., after suffering with
illness since Saturday.
She was born July 31, 1938 in Scott County to Raymond Lee and Goldie Bridgewater Smith.
She married Albert Lee Dowell Aug. 11, 1956, and he survives.
Dowell had resided in the Jefferson County area since 1940. She was a 1956 graduate of
Hanover High School, a member of the Hanover United Methodist Church and attended the
North Madison Christian Church. She was employed for 20 years with the Anderson Elementary
School in the cafeteria. She loved to bake, cook and working in her yard.
Survivors other than her husband include two sons, James Victor Dowell, Columbia, Tenn.,
and Jon Vincent Dowell and wife Kristine, Peru; three grandchildren, Josh Duggett, Ali and
Grant Dowell; two brothers, Marvin Smith, Hanover, and Harold Smith, Seymour; and several
nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Donald Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Morgan-Webster-Nay Funeral Home, 325
Demaree Drive, Madison, with Brother Bob Hicks officiating. Burial will take place at
Fairmount Cemetery, Madison. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. slow time Thursday at the
funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart and Stroke
Association or Anderson Elementary. Contribution cards are available at the funeral home.

Jerry Wayne Otto, 56

Jerry Wayne Otto, 56, Kokomo, passed away at 7 p.m. Monday, July 25, 2005 in DeMotte.
He was born May 14, 1949 in Kokomo to Edward and Laura Gingerich Otto.
Otto was a 1968 graduate of Maconaquah High School. He retired from Chrysler Corp. in 2002
after 31 years of service. He was a member of Howard-Miami Mennonite Church who loved to
travel and never knew a stranger.
Survivors include two brothers, Kenneth Otto and wife Judy, and Ron Otto and wife Sherry,
all of Kokomo; several nieces and nephews, Jerri and Rand Dozier, Brian Otto, Michael Otto
and J.R. Otto; and a great-niece, Claire Dozier.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A celebration of life service will be at Howard-Miami Mennonite Church at 11:30 a.m.
Saturday, with Pastor Lee Miller officiating. Internment of ashes will take place at a
later time in Christner Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of service
Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Howard-Miami Church.
Arrangements are by Hasler & Stout Funeral Home, Greentown.

Alex Tate Hawkins, 2, Russiaville, became an angel to be with Jesus at 10:35 a.m. Tuesday,
July 26, 2005 after a drowning accident. He passed away in the Howard Regional Health
Systems emergency room.
He was born Sept. 8, 2002 in Kokomo to Kurt M. and Susan Gustin Hawkins.
He liked the cartoons Scooby Doo and Elmo, and was full of charm, smiling all the time.
Survivors besides his parents include a sister, Megan Ruth Ann Hawkins, at home; four
grandparents, George and Alexia Hawkins, Russiaville, and John and Linda Gustin, Peru;
five great-grandparents, Ruth Hawkins and Eva McHale, both of Kokomo, Erma Rookstool,
Centerville, Ohio, Keith Rookstool, Bradenton, Fla., and Charles Gustin, Dublin, Ohio; six
aunts and uncles, Chris and Santana Hawkins, Burt and Stacy Hawkins, and Alyssa Hawkins,
all of Russiaville, and Katie Gustin, West Carrollton, Ohio; eight great-aunts and
-uncles, Susan Gustin, Dublin, Ohio, Mike and Paulette Bauer, Salisbury, Md., Lois and Ray
Berg, Crown Point, Kevin and Kim Rookstool, and Linda Rookstool, all of Beaver Creek,
Ohio; and nine cousins who will sadly miss their playmate, William, Hannah, Ashley, Emily,
Angel, Jaxon and Victoria Hawkins, and Leah and Rachael Rookstool.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Stout & Son Funeral Home, 200 E. Main
St., Russiaville, with Pastor Justin Webber officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset
Memory Gardens Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the
funeral home.
Raymond R. Butzin, 77

Raymond R. Butzin, 77, Rochester, formerly of Peru, passed away at 4 a.m. Wednesday, July
27, 2005 at Life Care Center, Rochester.
He was born Nov. 14, 1927 in Peru to Paul and Mollie Wilson Butzin.
Butzin graduated from Peru High School, and served in the U.S. Army in 1946 during World
War II. He retired from Olin Corp., Mexico, and was a member of St. John's Lutheran
Church, Peru.
Survivors include three nephews, Bill Butzin and wife Diane, and Rick Butzin and wife Pam,
all of Peru, and Ron Butzin and wife Linda, St. Peters, Mo.; and extended family members
David A. Carr and Andrea and Mark Shufelt and their children Alyssa, Allyson and Mark II,
all of Rochester.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert Butzin.
A graveside service will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Lutheran Cemetery, Peru, with Pastor
Kenneth Greenwald officiating. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Flowers-Leedy
Funeral Home, Peru.
