Dear David - what a pleasure that you have written this morning and "made
my day".......
My long-ago ancestors (1831-1878) who lived in Martin and Lawrence
Counties are written in our family histories. Although I am 81 and live in
Ardmore, OK, in previous years when visiting in Shoals and Bedford, the
genealogists have been very helpful in my search. Kudos to the ones who live there
and help us descendants!
My great-grandmother, Catharine HORSEY Beck,(1827 Mitchell, IN - 1866
Shoals, IN) is buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, as is her young daughter, Clara
Beck (1861-1863) (unknown gravesite). I had a new gravestone placed at
Catharine's burial place in 2001 since her old one was broken off at the top.
Catharine was the daughter of Lemuel and Rachael ? Horsey.
Deloris Sherfick and Nancy Baker have been helpful in my research. And had
it not been for the assistance in Bedford Library in the Marriage Records,
I may not have located the record of CATHARINE HORSEY first marriage to
Robert Greenwood on 27 May 1853, before her marriage to my grandfather
ALEXANDER DEVIN BECK on 21 Aug 1856 there.
I have written in my Beck Family Footprints that my great grandparents
were Catharine the Great and Alexander the Great!!!!
Alexander and Catharine worshipped at the Shoals Church of Christ and they
had these children: Susan, born 7 June 1857, Emma born 23 May 1959, Clara b
orn 28 Aug 1961and one son, John Jefferson Beck, born 26 June 1963 (record
in our family Bible). Then Alexander served in the Civil War at Bulls Gap,
TN. (I have the NARA records).
In the Martin County 1870 Census, the family is shown with Alexander and
wife Sarah Frances Survance, who raised his children, and was 15 years
younger. They did not have children of their own. She was born in Kentucky but
they married in Shoals, by Thomas Butler, M.G.
About 1878, the Beck family followed other Becks (from Washington County,
IN) to Texas, and John Jefferson Beck became my grandfather, living in
Wills Point, Van Zandt County, TX, where I was born.
Who was Robert C. Greenwood, born c1825 and his family, can anyone
comment? He evidently dealt in Real Estate, as records have been located of his
sales of property i Martin County.
WELCOME!
Family Genealogist,
J Nell Beck Truitt

This is just a note to introduce myself as the new List Admin of this list
as of a short while ago. I have been a volunteer List and Board Admin for
RootsWeb for about fifteen years or so now, so even though new to this list
I am hardly new to administering them.
I'm a retiree now, so am lurking in the background keeping an eye on things
much of an average day these days, but if you ask my wife I'm "in front of
that computer all day." I am also a very active genealogist as well,
just
like most of you are, and I will jump into the conversation whenever I have
something to offer just as most of the rest of you do. As for list
workings
and such, I try to keep things going according to all of RootsWeb's
commonly
accepted guidelines and practices just as any other list you may be on, so
you will not see any changes in that respect.
I look forward to meeting and working with you all in the coming weeks and
months, and also to sharing our mutual enjoyment (or is it "obsession?")
for
genealogy. If you need any help with a list operation problem, please
contact me at any time by writing to the Admin's address in my signature

genealogy or history of general interest to other subscribers.
